Only in The Bahamas: The PLP’s Unpaid ‘Mental Health Day’ Nobody Can Afford

The Davis–Bastian–Cooper administration is floating the idea of unpaid “mental health days” as if that helps anybody in the real world. The Tribune article already spells it out: these days would come with no pay, which immediately makes them useless for the very people they claim to help. Most Bahamians are already out here working their asses off just to survive — dealing with BPL bills that jump out of nowhere, grocery prices that feel like highway robbery, and rent increases that squeeze families to the limit. Financial stress is already one of the biggest causes of depression in this country. So telling people to stay home and earn nothing isn’t compassion; it’s punishment. And right on cue, the last-minute Golden Isles optics show up — fresh paving, roadside clean-ups, and quick fixes that magically appear only when a by-election is on the line.

Meanwhile, PLP cartel members like Leslia Miller-Brice in Seabreeze and Sebas Bastian in Fort Charlotte are flaunting cash and privilege on the campaign trail as they buy votes. They have money to waste and money to flash — because they aren’t living the reality the rest of the country is facing. The average Bahamian doesn’t have that luxury. People are struggling to keep the lights on, begging for extensions, cutting back on basic groceries, and juggling overdue bills. So when this administration tries to present unpaid mental health days as some caring initiative, it lands as pure out-of-touchness. If the PLP truly cared about mental health, they’d focus on easing the financial pressure breaking people — not introducing policies that make life even harder.
