A classic black & white aerial view of Lower Manhattan during construction of Cesar Pelli's World Financial Center on the landfill around June 1984. Tower 1 of the Financial Center (200 Liberty Street) can be seen directly in front of the Vista Hotel and the Twin Towers, tower 3 (200 Vesey Street) is visible on the very left. The completed Gateway Plaza Apartments, the first residential buildings of the future Battery Park City, can be seen on the left in front of 1 WFC. Some other landmark buildings of Lower Manhattan can be seen around the Trade Center including the NY Telephone Building (left), the Woolworth and Transportation Buildings with the tops of the Thurgood Marshall United States Courthouse and the Municipal Building in the background and 90 West Street with Bankers Trust Plaza and One Liberty Plaza to the right...

Flying over the World Trade Center complex in May 1973. The 110-story Twin Towers are nearly completed. The Northeast Plaza Building (5 WTC) and the U.S. Customshouse (6 WTC) are also nearly finished. The south building of the former Hudson Terminal's twin buildings is also gone now to make room for the Southeast Plaza Building (4 WTC). The terminal closed in 1971 when the Trade Center's PATH station opened. In the same month the 1,368 ft and 1,362 ft Twin Towers lost their title as the world's tallest buildings to the new Sears Tower in Chicago at 1,450 ft but remained the tallest structures in New York during their whole (and sadly too short) existence...

July 1987: The stairs at Church Street which led up to the 5 acre Austin J. Tobin Plaza with the great fountain, crowned by the Sphere. Some people can be seen, relaxing on benches, surrounded by plants - just a beautiful place. "New York begins at the World Trade Center" was one of the great slogans for the Trade Center in the 1980's - and it's my personal favorite one...

The beautiful sparkling skyline of Lower Manhattan during sunset, dominated by the World Trade Center's Twin Towers in August 1995. The World Financial Center with its Winter Garden Atrium, parts of the Woolworth and Transportation Buildings, the Millennium Hilton Hotel and One Liberty Plaza are (partly) visible in the fore/background - such a magnificent shot!
