“Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” Winston Churchill.

But as I listen and read my latest book selections, I worry we are in a rinse and repeat cycle we may not soon escape.

As Karem writes in “Free the Press” as he speaks about the losses in local journalism, “Today, those voices are being silenced by greed, pandemic, government intrusion, and a public that little understands anymore the vital role a community newspaper plays— and how without them we all will suffer.”

Every day around our country newsrooms shrink. Valuable, veteran critical thinkers are lost or young, energetic students are scared away.

Those of us leading newsrooms must challenge ourselves to keep our teams passionate, vigilant and engaged in the communities we serve.

We must ensure local journalism doesn’t just survive, but thrives. The health and well-being of our communities depend upon it.

TRUST. Hard to earn. Easy to break.
In the past several years, journalists have to work even harder to gain the reader's trust.
One of the best ways to gain and maintain that trust is to be transparent in your reporting.
This week, at News 6 WKMG / ClickOrlando did our best to provide transparent coverage of an important public records issue. We reported the original story on Monday and then followed it up with this reporter's notebook below. Not only does this provide the transparency the audience needs and deserves, but it also offers a road map to other journalists fighting for public records that belong to the public.
https://www.clickorlando.com/news/local/2022/04/07/heres-how-news-6-revealed-florida-gov-ron-desantis-staff-delayed-release-of-records/

Documents obtained by News 6 showed Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ staff intervened in a public records request related to Halsey Beshears, the former head of Florida’s business licensing agency, who is reportedly connected to a federal s*x trafficking investigation.

Thankful Central Florida Association of Black Journalists would think to honor the strong, smart women leading Central Florida’s local journalism efforts. I’m thankful to be on that list and honored to serve beside them.

On this last day of Women's History Month, Central Florida Association of Black Journalists is honoring Central Florida's TV News Directors.

Thank you for leading the way! 🎉🎊

Not used to seeing weekend runs on here, right? But thanks to the Nike Run Coach I was reminded of something important to share.

Coaching isn’t about following Training Plans and Formulas written in a sterile room in a spiral notebook.

It’s about coaching in the moment— in a moment of struggle or in a moment of success. AND it’s about coaching the individual.

Those of us who are leaders in our newsrooms have the honor and the responsibility to share our knowledge and prepare the next generation.

Are you coaching in the moment and for the individual? Or are you coaching to check a box?

Something I know I will be thinking about and wanted to share as we begin a new week.

When I watched this weekend's 60 Minutes I was saddened to once again be reminded of the displaced local journalists forced to take buyouts and watch their newsrooms become a shell of what they once were.
At RTDNA we too agree that when you have power that isn't watched, it tends to get abused.

The decline of print is a big problem. Here's how TV and radio stations can help.

Thank you for your commitment to the facts and information we all need.

Thank you for your commitment to the facts and information we all need.

The flow of information is vital at all times, but especially in times of conflict so the world can understand the price of war.

To the journalists in Ukraine: Thank you. And Godspeed.
