TODAY: the 37-second court case that terrified the FBI.
1988: Ice Cube writes “F**k tha Police” on Crenshaw notebook paper after the 5th illegal stop of the week.
Dr. Dre turns a desk-drawer slam into a judge’s gavel, stacks 9 samples in the SP-1200, hits record.
One-take verse, no hook, no apologies.
FBI sends Priority Records a cease-&-desist: “This song encourages cop killing.”
Sales jump 300 %.
Detroit ’89: cops raid the stage, cuff NWA, then ask for autographs.
Stream it today = every red-blue light since ’88 still flashing in 4 bars.

Cube’s “A young n***a got it bad ’cause I’m brown” has been quoted in 157 million Spotify streams, BLM placards, and countless TikToks—proof that the same rage that birthed the track is still being sampled by the next generation.

Before the Bronx had hip-hop, Brooklyn had the original Grandmaster.
In the late ’60s, built a wall-of-sound rig in Flatbush, threw park jams that pre-date Kool Herc’s parties, and became the first DJ ever to warm up 40 000 heads for James Brown at Yankee Stadium—live on WWRL, 1968. He coined the title “Grandmaster,” beat-matched two (sometimes three) tables, and blended funk, disco, rock and early breaks while most DJs were still just talking between 45s. The Bronx explosion soon eclipsed him, struggles followed, and he passed in ’92 at just 38, but every scratch you hear today still carries pollen from Flowers. Let’s give Grandmaster Flowers his flowers.

Track 12: PUBLIC ENEMY – “FIGHT THE POWER”
(Brooklyn, 1989 – the thermometer & the tension were both rising…)

1️⃣ THE CALL
Director Spike Lee needed ONE song that could score the hottest day of summer in Do The Right Thing—something “defiant, angry, very rhythmic.” He rang up Chuck D & the Bomb Squad and simply said:
“Give me an anthem.”
2️⃣ THE FLIGHT ✈️
While crossing the sky over Italy on tour with Run-D.M.C., Chuck scribbled the first verses on a napkin. Inspiration? The Isley Brothers’ 1975 protest cut of the same name—one of the first songs 15-year-old Carlton Ridenhour (a.k.a. Chuck) ever heard drop the word “bullsh*t” on wax. Mission: update that energy for Reagan/Bush-era Brooklyn.
3️⃣ THE SOUND BOMB 💣
The Bomb Squad layered 10+ samples (JB’s “Hot Pants,” Trouble Funk go-go drums, Branford Marsalis sax riffs) and pushed the tempo 10 BPM faster than most rap at the time. Result? A sonic Molotov—loops on loops on loops—impossible to stand still to.
4️⃣ THE LYRIC THAT SHOOK GRACELAND 🎸
“Elvis was a hero to most…
…but he never meant s*t to me.”
Chuck wasn’t dissing Elvis personally; he was torching the myth that crowned a white rocker “King” while Black pioneers got footnotes. Same verse, Flav adds: “Mother-f** him AND John Wayne,” calling out Hollywood’s cowboy propaganda.
5️⃣ THE SUMMER IT HIT ☀️
• Movie debuted June 30, 1989.
• Song blasted 15× inside the film.
• Jukeboxes, boomboxes & Blockbuster Video clerks kept it on repeat.
Within weeks “Fight the Power” became the soundtrack to real-life protests, not just reel-life pizza-parlor tensions.
6️⃣ LEGACY LOOP 🔁
• GRAMMY Hall of Fame, class of 2018.
• Still closes every Public Enemy concert.
• 2020 remix (Nas, Rapsody, Black Thought) sound-tracked global marches.
Chuck D calls it “the most important record we’ve done.”

🎤 CAPTION THIS
“Our freedom of speech is freedom of death—
we got to fight the powers that be.”
Still rings true every time the heat rises. Drop a 🖤 if you feel it, drop a 🔥 if you blast it today.

🎤✨ Forgotten Gem:
Ever meet somebody who could spin a fairy tale and a street tale in the same verse, all while sounding like he just stepped out of a London black cab—though he was really from the Walt Whitman projects in Fort Greene, Brooklyn?
That’s Dana Dane, the 80’s MC who proved you didn’t need a British passport to rock a dope accent. 🇬🇧🗽
Quick rewind:
• 1985: drops the spooky-story single “Nightmares” (if you heard it, you still remember the creaking bed).
• 1987: debut album Dana Dane With Fame goes gold—the first solo Brooklyn rap LP to do it. 🏆
• Stand-out cut: “Cinderfella Dana Dane,” a hip-hop Cinderella spoof that cracked the Top 15 on Billboard’s R&B chart and had every block party singing along.
• Follow-ups: Dana Dane 4 Ever (1990) and Rollin’ Wit Dana Dane (1995), plus a 2002 “Best Of” that’s perfect for late-night nostalgia spins. 📀
Where is he now?
Swapped the stage for the studio lot in L.A. 📽️
• Runs his own media company, Def Beat Entertainment.
• Published two novels (Numbers & Dwaffes), produced indie films, and spent six years hosting on Sirius XM’s classic-hip-hop channel.
• Still tours with old-school super-group The Alumni (Special Ed, Chubb Rock, Kwamé & more).
• And—because 2020 needed one more surprise—he launched “Fan-A-Cake,” a gadget that lets you blow out birthday candles without sharing germs. 🎂🤷‍♂️
So if your playlist is stuck on repeat, do yourself a favor: cue up “Cinderfella,” turn the volume way up, and remember the guy who made fractured fairy tales sound fly.
Drop a 🐺 if Dana Dane ever rocked your box, and tag a friend who still says “…and then I woke up!” in that fake British drawl. 😂
