Are Gettysburg’s famous ghost stories real—or have some of them simply been repeated so many times that we’ve stopped asking where they came from?
Sachs Covered Bridge is often called one of the most haunted places in Gettysburg. There’s just one problem: one of its most famous stories, the tale of Confederate soldiers being hanged from its rafters, appears to be a modern fabrication.
So where did that story come from?
In this episode, we look at how some of Gettysburg’s supernatural legends grew alongside the booming ghost-tour industry, and what happens when folklore, tourism, and genuine history become almost impossible to separate.
Because the real history of Gettysburg doesn’t need embellishment.
We’ll look at archival photographs, forgotten accounts, shallow graves discovered decades after the battle, and stories from Gettysburg College, where students returned to classrooms that had served as makeshift hospitals—and where the evidence of what happened inside was still visible.
Sometimes the truth is more haunting than the ghost story.
