A teenage girl has died after suffering a traumatic brain injury when another student allegedly struck her in the head with a metal water bottle at Reseda High School in Los Angeles, according to her family. Khimberly Zavaleta was hospitalized and placed in a coma following the incident. Despite undergoing surgery and receiving intensive medical care, she died early Wednesday morning, her mother, Elma Chuquipa, told NBCLA.
Chuquipa expressed profound grief over the loss of her daughter, saying she is devastated and struggling with the reality that she will never see her child again. Family members said Khimberly’s injury occurred during an altercation involving another student who threw the metal bottle.
In the days following her death, classmates organized a protest on campus to honor Khimberly’s memory and demand accountability. Students described her as joyful, energetic and always smiling. Dayari Diaz, a close friend who helped organize the demonstration, said the school community is heartbroken and called for justice, adding that students feel more action should be taken in response to the tragedy.
The Los Angeles Unified School District released a statement saying it was deeply saddened by the student’s death. While citing confidentiality laws that limit what details can be shared, the district said it is committed to supporting students, staff and families affected by the loss, including providing counseling and additional resources on campus.
The incident has left the Reseda High community mourning and searching for answers.
