Children who have bronchitis at least once before the age of 7 years are more likely to develop lung problems in later life, according to a study presented at the European Respiratory Society International Congress 2020, held virtually from Sept. 7 to 9.

Jennifer Perret, PhD, from the University of Melbourne in Australia, and colleagues assessed the relationship between childhood bronchitis and clinical outcomes in middle age using data from the Tasmanian Longitudinal Health Study (3,085 people; 1968 to 2016). Parent-reported bronchitis by age 7 years was categorized as none (reference), nonrecurrent, recurrent, and recurrent-protracted. Respiratory outcomes assessed at age 53 years included chronic bronchitis, asthma, and pre/postbronchodilator spirometry.

Cannabinoids, a class of prescription pills that contain synthetically-made chemicals found in ma*****na, are associated with a 64 percent increase in death among older adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), according to the first published data on the impact of cannabinoids on the respiratory health of individuals with the lung disease.

The findings, published Wednesday in Thorax, have significant clinical implications as more physicians prescribe cannabinoids to patients with COPD to treat chronic muscle pain, difficulty sleeping and breathlessness.

Cancer therapies blocking specific protein receptors called ErbB reduced inflammation in animal models of inflammatory diseases — including those affecting the lung — by destroying neutrophils, a type of immune cell, a preclinical study found.

According to the researchers, these findings suggest that treatments blocking the activity of these receptors may possibly be repurposed to treat several inflammatory diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Those aiming to reduce or quit their va**ng as one of their New Year’s resolutions recently got a bit of an assist from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). As of Jan. 2, FDA officials announced a decision to enforce a ban on fruit- and mint-flavored products that are used in e-cigarettes. Enforcement is expected to begin by early February. Although the ban does not apply to menthol and tobacco-flavored products and will not impact the sale of tank-based va**ng systems sold within va**ng shops, the regulation is expected to target the sale and distribution of va**ng products to young people.
