This is great news!

After more than 50 years, the medical community is moving towards a new TBI classification system. A coalition of experts has proposed a new way to evaluate TBI patients that is expected to lead to more accurate diagnoses and more appropriate treatment plans. The new classification system, called CBI-M, expands the assessment beyond immediate clinical symptoms, with new assessment criteria including biomarkers, CT and MRI scans, and additional factors. Dalton Tyrcha - A Journey Of Traumatic Brain Injury “TBI”

On February 18, 2019 I got a call that no parent ever wants to hear....your son has been in an auto accident. I was coming home from taking Luna to the vet with Taylor (our daughter), when Taylor got a text and then my phone started ringing, Taylor said Mom you need to answer that, it’s Dalton’s friend, Dal’s been in an accident. I talked to the boy on the phone and got some information from him. I found out there was 5 boys involved and they were going to 2 different hospitals, split between Halifax and Advent. Not sure who was going where. I immediately called Jeff and told him. Jeff was closest to Halifax and I was closest to Advent, we each went to the hospitals and waited, feeling nothing but fear and anguish. Jeff called me and said Dalton is one of the boys being coming to Halifax and he is being life flighted in. My heart sank and my stomach turned. I don’t remember driving to the hospital, but I got Tay and I there. When I arrived, I was shown to the waiting room where Jeff was sitting with one of the other boy’s mom. There we sat waiting, after a while some hospital staff came in, I believe it was some nurses and the hospital clergy, I clearly remember seeing the bible in his hand. We were taken to Dalton, and there lay our beautiful boy, looking as if he were just sleeping. We could not see the damage to his head because of his thick head of hair. The doctor let us know he had severe head trauma on his left side and he would be taken into surgery. His first surgery lasted 5 hours. The doctor came out and said everything went fine, let’s see if he makes it through the night. He did. The next morning a CT was done and brain bleed was discovered on his right side as well. Back into surgery he went, another 2 hours, which went fine as well. Dalton was put into an induced coma so his body could let his brain heal and then it was a wait and see game. Luckily his CP’s (cranial pressure) remained stable and he improved, a trach was placed and he was removed from the vent, a PEG tube (feeding tube) was also placed. He was slowly removed from the coma inducing drug and awakened. Not very responsive but he was alive, our boy was still with us. After a month in ICU at Halifax, we made our trip up to Shepherd Center in Atlanta to further his journey to recovery. He had and still has the power of prayer on his side, along with so much love from friends, family and strangers, near and far. And we thank each and every one of you for keeping us in your hearts. We are truly blessed.
