Several hours after Gov. Janet Mills suspended her campaign for the U.S. Senate and dropped out of the race, University of Maine adjunct professor Andrea LaFlamme spoke with the Maine Campus about why she remains committed to running as a write-in candidate despite mounting odds — including the wave of endorsements Democratic frontrunner Graham Platner has received following Mills’ announcement. LaFlamme said her campaign centers on reproductive rights, universal preventative healthcare and efforts to uplift working-class Mainers as the only elected union leader in the race.

Since 1936, Maine Day has included a long-standing tradition of service across campus at the University of Maine. On April 29, the university celebrated its 8th year of the annual Maine Day Meal Packout (MDMP) event. The day of the event, hundreds of volunteers show up to pack meals distributed to Maine food pantries in a bid to reduce food insecurity across the state. Last year, over 50,000 meals were sent out, and this year over 80,000 meals were packed by 500 volunteers. Community members, organizers and volunteers spoke to the Maine Campus about the collective work required to prepare for the event.

Maine legislators approved a budget on April 9 that is designed to protect family planning and reproductive healthcare, providing millions in annual funding for those services, according to a press release from Planned Parenthood. The budget is part of bill LD 335, sponsored by Rep. Amy Kuhn, which was left as unfinished business by the legislature. However, the bill has taken a new shape in the form of a budget amendment, which means that Maine is on track to become one of the first states to build an allowance for reproductive healthcare into the state budget.
