Let us know in the comments below (with a pic if you've got it). We may reach out to you for permission to publish your response in the Community Voices segment in an upcoming issue (so keep an eye on your message requests).
..and we would never ask a question without answering ourselves. This is a piece from my (Craig McClarren) collection that I've never given the spotlight it deserves. Collected from Bancroft, Ontario back in 2001, this piece of marble has deep purple fluorite swirls coursing through it with the occasional bleb of glassy green apatite!

Do you have pics from a few Michigan campgrounds that you'd be willing to share for articles in the next few issues of GLRH Magazine?

One of our gifted authors wrote campground reviews for almost a dozen locations, but lost her hard drive with her photos (yikes!). We're looking for photos from the following locations to supplement our Campground Review articles:

Two Hearted River
Van Riper
Andrus Lake
Wilkins State Park
Fisherman's Island
High Rock Bay
Black River Harbor
P.H. Hoeft
Leelanau State Park
Pilgrim Haven
Point Iroquois

If you've got photos from any of those locations and are interested in seeing them published, please leave a comment and/or message us directly. If published, your photo will be credited to you in the magazine and you will receive a link for you and your friends and family to access that issue for free.

Thanks in advance, your photos make our magazine the amazing periodical it is!

It took a month longer than expected, but we finally got our 18-issue bundle sorted.

That's all 13 back issues of our amazing magazine, plus at least 5 bi-monthly future issues through the end of the year for only $24.99.

That's a price that's so low, it's literally putting us out of business. Grab the deal while it lasts- it won't be here forever! Tap or click the link below to take a closer look!

We haven't posted much lately because we're transitioning to a bi-monthly format and offering the annual subscription as an 18-issue bundle that will include all back issues. We're still prepping that and working out the kinks, though- it's not ready to go yet.

I do want to announce for our subscribers that the February issue has been released now and can be read at any time. If you aren't a subscriber, you could read this issue individually or bide your time and subscribe in a few days when you'll get the whole back-catalog as part of the deal!

We have always had close ties with Michigan Rockhounds, but with the chaos of it being shutdown and restarted randomly and the flight of its admins and mods, we'd like to recommend joining Rock Hunters of the Great Lakes.

Created and moderated by the entire team from Michigan Rockhounds (minus one), Rock Hunters of the Great Lakes is a long-term stable and friendly group for asking about locations, sharing your gorgeous pics, getting help with rock and mineral ID, and getting tips for crafting and polishing.

And better yet, this group is not restricted to Michigan but is Great Lakes-wide!

You could wait for Michigan Rockhounds to shut down again or you could join now to earn your Founding Members badge. We encourage you to go check it out here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/glrockhunters

What was the most amazing thing you found, saw, or discovered that wasn’t a rock while you were out rockhounding?

We're looking for stories (and pics if you have them) toshare with our Community Voices segment. So often when we're out, the best things we find or see aren't rocks at all and we'd love to hear what you guys have encountered.

Here’s my (Craig McClarren's) story: the wife and I were traveling across the western US on the super cheap almost 10 years ago, camping on public land most of the way. In Idaho, we went way out of our way to visit City of Rocks to do a little rock climbing and hiking. That night, we didn’t bother with the tent and just slept on a rocky outcrop under the stars.

As we were lying down, a bright light pierced the sky over the far western horizon. It streaked crazily fast across the sky. I woke my wife and she grabbed my glasses off of my face so she could look. I let her have them for a few seconds and then grabbed them back, lol. About half way across the sky, it broke into 2 pieces: one seeming to fly upward and yellow in color, breaking into a trail of objects that slowly blinked out, and the other a radiant green color that continued on.

That was July 27, 2016. The following link has the story about the Chinese rocket that came in and a link of its own to someone else’s video of that event. We didn’t get any pics or video, we were too stunned and fighting over who would wear my glasses to see it in focus! This pic is of my gorgeous wife trying to sleep in the next morning. Being married to a geologist isn't for everyone! https://www.space.com/33581-amazing-fireball-from-chinese-rocket-space-junk-video.html

Identifying a mineral from a photo can be tricky- color is one of the most unreliable methods for mineral identification. Could you recognize this one by the look of it?

Geologist Craig McClarren couldn’t. When he found this specimen in Houghton County, MI, he was baffled. What on Earth could this exotic radiantly orange mineral be???

It was nestled in what appeared to be calcite, but orange isn’t a “flavor” that calcite normally comes in. So, he went to the legend of Great Lakes minerals, Shawn Carlson, for help. Shawn’s response:

“Did you actually test it? Try dropping it in acid.”

Craig took a tiny bright orange grain of the fractured mineral and dropped it into hydrochloric acid. It bubbled wildly and vanished.

“I’ve found candy-colored orange calcite in that area exactly once in my life,” Shawn explained. “I’m not sure why it’s that color, but I think it’s a rare earth element mixed in. Maybe yttrium.”

Every mineral can be identified to a reasonable degree of certainty by testing/observing hardness, habit, fracture, reactivity… and lastly color. Even experienced geologists need that reminder once in a while.
