Dr. Biese has worked with a youth sport specialization research group based at UW-Madison for the past 8 years. Last week, Dr. Biese and his colleagues were ecstatic to see their most recent work published, "Development and Validation of the Wisconsin Sport Specialization Questionnaire (WISSQ) for Older Adolescent Athletes." The validated survey is the first of its kind to provide a scale of youth specialization not only on an athlete's sport volume and exclusion of other sports, but also on the motivation for specializing in a sport and the social factors that may lead to an athlete specializing in a sport. If you are interested in youth sport specialization, you can check out this article below along with the two other articles that proceed this publication.

The Department of Kinesiology was well represented at the Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Activity event this past Wednesday and Thursday. Kinesiology had a total of 8 students present and the department had diverse research represented from Dr. Wallace (5 projects), Dr. Petit (1 project), and Dr. Biese's (1 project) mentorship.

Congratulations to our undergraduate presenters Abby Fregien, Olivia Breunig, Kendall Thews, Brett Norling, Kierra Boyd, and Jon Mathieu. Additionally, congratulations to our Master's of Science in Athletic Training students Drue Polka, and Olivia Davel!

Last but certainly not least, Olivia Breunig and Abby Fregien know how to win whether they are helping the women's volleyball team reach the Elite Eight or presenting research. Their Student project, under the direction of Dr. Wallace, won the most prestigious undergraduate poster session award, the John & Linda Schuh Student Research and Scholarly Activity Award! Congratulations to you both on another "victory" during your illustrious UW Oshkosh academic careers!

Last week, Kinesiology student Kennedy Koehler presented her research (mentored by Dr. Kyle Petit) at the Research in the Rotunda event in Madison, WI. Kennedy and Dr. Petit joined researchers from around the state to highlight incredible student projects happening in Wisconsin. Kennedy and Dr. Petit’s project was specific to the differences between athletes and non-athletes when using a concussion diagnostic tool that measures balance and reaction time. Great job, Kennedy and Dr. Petit!

The Pre-Rehabilitation Professionals Society had Grant Yee, from the Green Bay Packers and Atlanta Falcon's seasonal/fellowship athletic trainer, present to the club about working in the NFL as an athletic trainer. Grant had great wisdom to share on how to help your application stand out in the crowded job market of professional sports. He also demonstrated how to use vacuum splints! Thank you Grant for your time and for answering all the students' questions!

Congratulations to our own, Dr. Kyle Petit, for receiving a $10,000 Wisconsin System’s Spark Grant! Dr. Petit is using this grant to study how concentrated oxygen therapy could be used in concussion recovery.
