The Oskaloosa School Board voted unanimously on Wednesday, September 17, to terminate the teaching contract of Oskaloosa High School art teacher Matthew Kargol under Iowa Code Chapter 279.

On Thursday, September 18, Kargol filed a federal lawsuit against the Oskaloosa Community School District, Kargol v. Oskaloosa Community School District, No. 4:25-cv-00351, in the Southern District of Iowa.

The district released a statement noting the matter was handled according to state and federal law and board policy, but declined further comment, citing ongoing litigation.

Around 5:15 p.m. today, we were notified of a social media post involving an Oskaloosa High School teacher. Our team has been working on this throughout the evening and taking steps consistent with district policy. We recognize our community’s concerns, and we have an investigation in process. 🌳🎣🏹 The annual Youth Outdoor Field Day is back! Join Mahaska County Conservation and local partners on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 8 a.m.–noon at Russell Wildlife Area.

Kids and families can enjoy fishing, wildlife ID, .22 shooting, fossil hunting, trapping, water safety, throwing, trail exploring, and much more. Hands-on fun for all ages!

💲 Cost is $5 per person. Register early online with a card or on-site with cash or check to Friends of Mahaska County Conservation. Kids who participate in activities are eligible to win prizes!
