This black bear spent most of the day hanging out in a tree across from the Beaumont Hotel today in downtown Ouray (08/17/2026). Apparently, even Ouray’s bear-resistant trash cans aren’t always a match for a determined and very smart bear. 😂

Officials said the bear wasn’t causing any harm and the best course of action was to give it plenty of space and let it come down and wander off on its own.

We’re also entering the time of year when bears are packing on the calories for winter. Colorado Parks and Wildlife says that beginning around mid-August, bears enter hyperphagia — a feeding frenzy when they may forage for up to 20+ hours a day.

If you’re visiting Ouray, remember that you’re visiting bear country:

🐻 Never approach or feed a bear.
📸 Watch and photograph from a safe distance.
🐕 Keep dogs leashed and under control.
🗑️ Make sure bear-resistant trash cans are completely latched.
🏃 Never run from a bear.
🌲 Give bears plenty of room and an escape route.
👀 And in Ouray… always remember to LOOK UP!

Seeing wildlife right in town is one of the incredible things about Ouray — but keeping these bears wild and safe takes all of us.
