I love coming across individuals (especially former athletes/coaches) who do some time in prison (he served less than 6 months in minimum security followed by 5-weeks of halfway house) and come out completely reformed (allegedly). I went ahead and purchased Michael Center's book off Amazon.com to get more insight about his involvement in "Operation Varsity Blues". I'm curious to see if he takes more accountability for his actions in his book than he did in this interview with the Star. 🤨
This Kansas City Star article intrigued me because I was at KU when Centers was there, but pretty sure we never crossed paths. I actually met with the KU Tennis Coach Scott Perelman early in the Fall of 1987, my freshman year, to inquire about walking on to the team. 😂 This was not going to happen because my high school tennis game truly sucked and I was not the caliber athlete for the collegiate level. Plus, John Falbo was a freshman as well and he was the #1 singles player in the Nation in '87 (I read his book too). This was all before the men's tennis program eventually went away in March '01 due to budgetary woes. ✂️
However, a nice side-story to all of this, Chris Walker (a doubles specialist for KU), met me in Perelman's office that day and the Coach had him explain to me how the Fall season worked with tournaments, etc. before the Big 8 season started in the Spring (Coach was like get this kid out of my office 😅). As we rode on the bus from the Kansas Athletics Department, Chris (maybe a Junior or Senior) and his doubles partner introduced me to a Kansas Men's Basketball player, who may have been getting a ride back to the Jayhawk Towers at the time. So, in the end, not a bad day for the Freshman Taco getting to meet the future 1988 NCAA 🏀 Champion/MVP, Danny Manning, after realizing my tennis career at KU was already over, well before it really even started. A few years later, another opportunity to play sports for The University of Kansas would arise ... after a semester of studying abroad in Australia 🇦🇺 my Junior year.🥹 🎾🏀🏉
(And thanks to Chris Walker & Danny Manning for making me feel important when all I really had to hold on to was a pipe dream. 💭)
