In 2015, David Ermold and David Moore walked into the county clerk's office in Rowan County, Kentucky to get a marriage license. Kim Davis refused them. They came back. She refused them again, on camera, and the footage went everywhere.

She went to jail for five days rather than sign, and became a national figure for it.

Then the case ground on for eight years. Four trips to the Sixth Circuit, one petition to the Supreme Court, and finally a three-day jury trial in September 2023.

The jury awarded Ermold and Moore 50,000 dollars each. The court then added roughly 246,000 dollars in the couple's legal fees and another 14,000 in expenses, and her appeal against the lot of it was denied.

The two men she turned away from that counter are married. The final bill for turning them away came to about 360,000 dollars.
