Big Boy to make stop in Hermann

HERMANN – Area residents will have another chance next month to see one of the largest steam locomotives ever built when Union-Pacific’s Big Boy pulls into Hermann for a brief visit.

The Monday, July 20, stop is set for 3:15 p.m. The 15-minute stop is expected to draw hundreds, possibly thousands, based on an earlier visit by the smoke-belching behemoth.

Agreement clears way for county’s use of site for winter road material

An agreement signed Thursday morning by Gasconade County and city of Owensville official clears the way for the county use a site to store winter road materials such as salt and cinders.

The deal was developed as part of the county’s plan to strategically place materials in different areas of the county in order to more quickly respond to winer-weather conditions in the farther reaches of the county. This storage site is an unused parcel of city property.

SEEK students pitch plan to renovate courtyards

Owensville High School (OHS) SEEK students presented on April 20 possible configurations for the courtyards on campus as power lunch spaces. While the Gasconade County R-2 Board of Education did not take action at the May 18 meeting, they did discuss possibilities moving forward.

Board member Kari Nolting said she’d like to provide the students, Cohen Dare and Rylee Dare, with a response to their proposal, “What do we do with the courtyards at the high school?”

Three baseball Bearcats earn postseason honors

Reaching the semifinals of the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 3, District 7 Baseball Tournament hosted by Hermann High School at Dick Ochsner Ball Park, the host Bearcats saw their season end at the hands of the eventual district champion Centralia Panthers.

Four diamond Dutchmen earn postseason honors from FRC, district coaches

Even with their season ending following a 5-1 loss to the eventual district champion Eldon Mustangs, Steven Kemp’s Owensville Dutchmen baseball team had four of his players earn postseason honors from either the coaches of the Four Rivers Conference (FRC) or the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 4, District 9 Tournament hosted by School of the Osage.

MSHP completes 2026 school bus inspections; both county districts received 90-plus percent ratings

Both the Gasconade County R-1 and R-2 school districts received 90-plus percent inspection ratings on their respective bus fleets, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s report released Monday.

Col. Michael A. Turner, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, reports MSHP inspectors worked with school district transportation staff across the state to examine more than 11,000 buses with 10,239 of those rated as “approved” on their initial inspection.
