Fort Knox here at Oxfordโs local Coop @ 182. Making a SAFE coop is of the UTMOST importance when tending chickens. Why? What needs are met by having a properly made coop?
๐ Safety from predators
๐ Protection from the elements
๐ Access to food and water
๐ A comfy place to sleep (roosting bars)
๐ Egg laying space (nesting boxes)
๐ Clean home to prevent illnesses
๐ A home close to their protector ๐โโ๏ธ
Weโre lucky to live in Mississippi so we have what is callled an โopen coopโ. During the harsh winters weโve had we cover all but the north side with tarp as the chickens do not like a draft. We used to let them free range but being NPIP certified we follow the MBAH (Mississppi Board of Animal Health) guidelines which now advices to have covered or enclosed areas for your chickens due to avian influenza outbreak that started in 2021. So a question you may as yourself is: โCan I get avian influenza from eating poultry or eggs?โ The answer to that from the USDA is: โNo. Poultry and eggs that are properly prepared and cooked are safe to eat.โ Also as NPIP certified chicken owners, we provide Safe Handling Instructions with every sale we make and get our birds regularly tested for diseases (none so far ๐ ).
One last bit of advice/caution:
DONโT run and buy your own chickens because โeggs are so expensive at the storeโ. Trust me, it is WAY more expensive to keep chickens than it is to simply buy your eggs. And A WHOLE LOT MORE WORK.
The money we raise from egg sales go towards helping with the feed costs. But there are so many other expenses that comes along with having a safe, happy, healthy chickens. Nesting pads, endless cleaning supplies, food grade DE, lime, straw, vitamins, medications, fencing, entertainment, feeders, waterers, oyster shells, incubator, vet fees - and of course the cost of building Fort Knox itself (automated gate, lights, fencing, water supply, various contraptions to keep other animals away). As a matter of fact the list seems to never end ๐คช
On the other hand, if you want a wonderful hobby (albeit a LOUD one) we highly recommend it as they provide us with so much JOY ๐คฉ
