A poem from Poetry: An Expression of Life by Kenneth Lovingood

FLOWERS IN THE GHETTO

While speaking to the gardener on Stanford avenue,
my wife gave him a little job she wanted him to do.
We have so many flowers here and over there are none,
the next time you go there to work put some out in the sun.
He looked at her and said “Ok,” but you could tell he lied.
He couldn’t see the sense of it and kept his thoughts inside.
“Why would you want to brighten up, a place so low and mean?”
“They won’t appreciate your work and laugh at what they’ve seen.”
“Survival is the thing they do. They have no time for perks.
They think that anyone who plants are just a bunch of jerks.”
But we can hear a different sound and see a different view.
The Ghetto is a place to live and work and make it through.
And if we are to break the bonds of judging those who stay,
then we must plant some flowers and help them grow today.
A flower in the ghetto says that hope is still around,
and life is there to meet us in the hard and trampled ground.

Excerpt from "The Promise of Isle Brevelle":
Cousins brought a great sense of connection to the people of Isle Brevelle. There was an invisible layer of trust that caused you to be happy just to be in each others presence. When a visitor came to Isle Brevelle, almost the first thing they noticed was how the people seemed to care for each other.

To live as one with nature as the native.
To nurture and preserve it as your own.
To walk and live and work with thoughts of others
who'll have to live with nature when you're gone.
Remember when it's gone you can't replace it.
It's up to you the coming of the dawn.
