Sweeps seem synonymous with Drury hockey lately. The Panthers engaged in another dominant weekend as the Division 1 and Division 3 teams won both games against Iowa State University and Dallas Baptist University, respectively on October 10 and 11.
The seventh-ranked D1 Panthers won 6-1 and 8-1 over Iowa State, while the Division 3 team captured 6-2 and 4-3 wins over Dallas Baptist University.
In Game one, the D1 Panthers controlled most of the game, outshooting Iowa State 61-15.
Drury netted four goals in the first period. Two were power-play goals scored by Francis Young-Menard. In the first period, Jarrod Gale got his first goal of the season. The fourth goal of the period came from Jamison St Clair.
Tyson Horiachka scored the only Drury goal of the second. Joe Davidson added another power-play goal in the third.
Drury’s penalty-kill line worked fabulously with no power play goals allowed. Iowa State racked up the penalty minutes with 33 total minutes.
Drury goaltender, Jozef Kuchaslo, saw little action during the game, with only 15 shots against. Iowa State goalie William Pinney, faced 61 shots on goal. Both goalies did have high save percentages, with Kuchaslo possessing a 0.933 and Pinney holding a 0.902 for the game.
In game two, Drury again outshot Iowa State in the seven-goal margin of victory.
Pinney completed his second start in net for Iowa State, in game two, while Drury switched to Brett Sweet. Pinney made 46 saves on 54 shots and ended with a .852 save percentage. Sweet had 21 saves on the 22 shots. He ended with an amazing .955 save percentage.
Jackson Truchan added the first two goals of the game in the first, followed by Lukas Ravenstein. Daniel Beaupre and Matthew Johnston both scored in the second. Beaupre and Anmol Garcha also scored a power-play goal in the third. Young-Menard finalized the score with the last goal of the game.
Standout players for the D1 team on the weekend were Young-Menard with a total of five points between the two games. Luke Aston also led in assists — with three assists in game one. Beaurpe also figured in the scoring with his two goals.
While Drury was assessed more penalties in Game two, Iowa State had more minutes due to a 10-minute misconduct assessed in the third period.
Drury’s Division 3 team played DBU and skated away with 6-2 and 4-3 wins.
Dallas Baptist scored first in Game one, but Drury came back with five goals in a row. Four different players added their first goals of the season: Caleb Limpert, Neil Cerrato, Gage Robb and Caleb Schmitz. Cerrato’s was a power-play goal. Louis Fournier and Richard Biszant rounded out the six goals.
Drury struggled to stay out of the penalty box. The Panthers ended up with a total of 24 minutes on six infractions, double the number of Dallas Baptist.
More pressure was put on DBU’s goaltender Nathaniel Madrigal, with a total of 36 shots and 13 coming in the first period. Drury goalie Garrett Limpert only saw 15 shots during the game.
Game two was a closer battle between the two teams.
Dallas Baptist took a 2-1 lead after the first period with the only goal coming from C. Limpert. Drury took the lead in the second with a pair of goals from Fournier. Gannon Steggall scored his first goal of the season in the third period.
Penalties were lower in game two with a total of six penalties between the two teams. Most of the calls were for roughing.
Both game-one goaltenders started game two. Drury had 43 total shots on Madrigal and G. Limpert faced only 17 shots.
Standout players from the weekend games were C. Limpert and Cerrato with three points each across the two games. G. Limpert was also a standout stopping 27 of 32 shots.
