The Big Island Press Club has announced its 2026 scholarship recipients, honoring two local students pursuing careers in communications and storytelling.
Rianne Angelique Kealohaokalani Kalama Empaynado, a Hilo High School alumna and current University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo communications major, was awarded the first-place $1,500 scholarship. Mari Iwata, a Waiākea High School alumna studying screenwriting at Loyola Marymount University, received the second-place $1,000 scholarship.
The awards were presented during the club's annual Scholarship Dinner Reception on May 28 at the Hilo Yacht Club, which featured a keynote address by Hilo-born surf journalist and communications professional Daniel Ikaika Ito.
Founded in 1967, the Big Island Press Club awards annual scholarships to students with Hawaiʻi Island ties who are pursuing careers in journalism or related media fields.
