German photographers Stefanie Zoche & Sabine Haubitz capture the vibrant façades and unique architecture of South Indian movie theaters in their series “Hybrid Modernism.” From neon greens and pinks to bold reds and yellows, these images showcase a blend of modernism and local culture. From the 1950s to the 1970s, South India saw the construction of vibrant cinemas blending local and Western styles. These colorful façades and extravagant interiors set the stage for a unique cinematic experience. Between 2010 and 2014, we documented this “hybrid modernism,” capturing a rich cinematic culture now being replaced by multiplexes.
