"Zeitgeist USA: Songs of Power and Protest" takes listeners on a one-hour trip through six decades of American protest music, starting in the 1960s and moving all the way to 2018. Host Wolf walks through ten songs that came out of real moments in the country's history, from Sam Cooke writing "A Change Is Gonna Come" after being turned away from a Louisiana motel, to Creedence Clearwater Revival calling out who actually got sent to Vietnam, to Marvin Gaye's quiet devastation on "What's Going On," to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young responding to the Kent State shootings within days. The show moves through Bruce Springsteen's misunderstood "Born in the U.S.A.," Public Enemy bringing protest into hip hop, Rage Against the Machine and N.W.A. pushing back against police and power in the '90s, Green Day taking on post-9/11 media in the 2000s, and ending with Childish Gambino's "This Is America." Along the way, Wolf shares the stories behind the songs, the moments that sparked them, and why each one still hits today.
