Living near a golf course may be making you sick.

That’s not a scare tactic. It’s a study.

Ocyrus Erickson of Terra Preta shared this on Episode 217: people living within one mile of a golf course have a 128% higher risk of developing Parkinson’s disease compared to those living six miles away.

Palm Harbor alone has several golf courses within residential neighborhoods.

The deeper issue isn’t just golf courses. It’s that chemical exposure from synthetic lawn care has become so normalized we’ve stopped seeing it as a problem.

It’s in our soil.

It runs off into our waterways.

We walk through it after irrigation. Our kids and pets play in it.

Our planet is literally called Earth. Soil is everywhere. And what we put into it comes back to us — whether we’re paying attention or not.

The question Ocyrus is asking — and the one worth sitting with — is how do we get back to a system where none of this was necessary in the first place?

Your plant’s roots run a stock exchange.

Not a metaphor. An actual underground economy.

Ocyrus Erickson of Terra Preta breaks it down: plants collect sunlight and convert it into sugar. That sugar becomes currency — and below the surface, there’s an entire workforce waiting to get paid.

Different organisms take on different jobs. One species pulls nitrogen. Another handles phosphorus. Some go after molybdenum or magnesium.

And some don’t deal in nutrients at all — they act as bodyguards, lining the root tips and blocking crevices so pathogens can’t get in and make the plant sick.

None of them have access to sunlight underground. So the plant pays them in sugar.

Strip that system with synthetic fertilizers and the workers disappear. No connections. No workforce. No defense.

This is what healthy soil is actually doing beneath your feet.

Fertilizer is making your plants weaker.

That’s not an opinion. It’s biology.

Ocyrus Erickson of Terra Preta breaks it down like this: plants are wired to reach.

When nutrients are scarce, roots push outward, form connections with fungi and bacteria, and build a support network that sustains them long-term.

It’s the same reason humans get stronger under resistance.

Synthetic fertilizers short-circuit that entire process. They dump a quick-release supply of nutrients right at the root zone — so the plant never has to reach for anything.

No connections formed. No network built. Just a plant sitting in a chemical drip, dependent on the next application to survive.

And because most synthetics are salt-based? They’re quietly raising your soil pH and breaking down the microbial life that would have supported those roots in the first place.

The yard looks fine. Until it doesn’t.

Your plant can become its own pesticide.

No spray. No chemicals. Just healthy soil doing what it was designed to do.

Ocyrus Erickson of Terra Preta uses a tool called a refractometer — yes, it looks like a lightsaber — to measure the sugar content inside a plant’s sap.

That number tells him exactly how well the plant is photosynthesizing and producing energy for itself.

Here’s where it gets wild: raise that sugar level high enough, and the plant becomes toxic to pests.

The sugar shifts from a double to a triple carbon bond — something insects physically can’t digest. It then ferments into alcohol and kills them on contact.

The forest figured this out a long time ago. We’re just catching up.

They called it Terra Preta — “dark earth.”

Ancient Amazonian soil so fertile it’s still thriving thousands of years later. No synthetic inputs. No modern tech. Just deep indigenous knowledge about what the land actually needs.

Ocyrus breaks down where this name comes from — and why it changes everything we think we know about the rainforest. 🌿

Preparing my 80-year-old self for what’s coming 👀

The scams keep getting more sophisticated… and more relentless.

It’s a war of attrition.
Calls, texts, emails, fake links — over and over, every single day.

Then one day you’re distracted, stressed, tired, or just not thinking clearly… and they catch you at the right moment.

That’s how it happens.

The scary part is almost everyone thinks, “That would never happen to me,” until it does.

It makes you wonder what our world is turning into.

Maybe part of the answer is slowing down a little.
Less dependence on constant noise.
More face-to-face conversations.
More time outside.
More sunrises, sunsets, and real connection 🌅

Knowing what’s possible matters — because awareness gives you a better chance of catching it before it catches you.

Stay sharp. Stay safe, friends 🤝

What a time, what a group!

Beyond the Mic started as a simple way for the guests of to show up and meet in person. Taking the conversations offline and in person.

The podcast startsd 5 years ago and in year 6 we’re making a shift. We’ll lean into 4 themes.

Real Estate, Sports, Wellness, and Conservation.

Four areas that all play a role in how we live, how we grow, and how we build community here locally. Still the same great local businesses but shaped around the four themes.

Beyond that we’ll be hosting more in person events to break up our routine and be present with great people.

I hoped you have enjoyed the journey thus far and will continue to enjoy what’s ahead.

I’m looking forward to the next 5 years!

A big shout out to supporting this event!

And for capturing the moment

See you soon!

1.5 billion 🤯

About 9% of publicly traded companies reported a data breach each year.

That’s a lot of data and it feels as if these hackers are getting more and more sophisticated.

Have you received any training from your employer or do you offer that as a part of your company to ensure your data is secure?

Not all networking events are created the same.

Beyond the Mic was built for people who are intentional with their time, their relationships, and the community they’re helping shape.

Over the past 5 years, Palm Harbor Local has shown me that real opportunities don’t come from exchanging business cards. They come from genuine conversations and meaningful connections.

This is a room designed for exactly that.

📍 March 11 | 5:00–6:30 PM
📍
Light food and drinks provided.

If you value real connection over surface-level networking, you’ll fit right in.

RSVP by 3/6. Link in bio.
