After rounds of espresso and chilled limoncello liqueur, LaShantay and Horatio took their leave. Mitch began cleaning the grill, scraping bits of charred meat and vegetables off its stainless-steel racks with a wire brush, while Tara retrieved the remaining perishables and stowed them in the refrigerator.
Pausing in front of the kitchen window, Tara rested her palms on the sink’s marble counter, feeling a slight flutter of giddiness as she watched Mitch work on the lucky metal grill. Her focused expression was identical to the cigarette-lit one that first drew Tara’s attention, the same look of immersion now so familiar when Mitch made love to her, as if she—Tara—were the alpha and omega, the axis upon which the world revolved and the moon pulled the tides; and that no one—nothing—held greater regard.
