"If you're designing a watering hole in Palm Springs, California – that desert oasis of midcentury modern allure – it must contain a certain amount of glamour. Look no further than Bar Issi, a new lobby lounge inside the freshly-unveiled Thompson Hotel that's awash with the sun-soaked hues of the Mediterranean. Behind the maximalist spectacle is London and LA-based design studio Fettle. ‘The restaurant is a playful ode to the colour and frivolity of its Palm Springs surroundings, while also being designed around the idea that the space is the first thing most visitors to the hotel see as they drive in,’ explains Tom Parker, co-founder of Fettle..."

"Section 14: The Untold Story, the newest exhibit at the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum, explores the complicated history of a tract of land in the heart of downtown Palm Springs. The square-mile location, and the people who have lived on Section 14, have been the subject of headlines since President Ulysses S. Grant signed the origin documents, making the land part of the Agua Caliente Indian Reservation in 1876. In 1968, the Riverside Press-Enterprise won a Pulitzer Prize for reporting on the effects of the federal government’s guardianship of the tribe....

"Cyrus Tahmasebi blames the margaritas. He and his wife, Marcie, were on their second round at Fresh Agave in Palm Desert when the big red barn across Highway 111 caught their eyes. They’d struck up a conversation with locals at a nearby table, asking where to hang out in Palm Desert. The group pointed across the street and said, “That used to be a fun place — until a fire shut it down.” Marcie, an interior designer, turned to Cyrus. “How fun would it be to buy it and fix it up into somewhere we’d want to hang out?” she asked..."

Margaritas sparked an idea—Cyrus and Marcie spotted a fire-damaged barn and dreamed of reviving it as a hotspot.

What’s Our Story?

In 2017, Elijah Hartman became concerned about the growing shortage of accurate and supportive LGBTQ+ media content across the United States. Television, radio, and online media were highlighting an increase in homophobia, discrimination, and hate crimes against LGBTQ+ persons, while engaging in a pattern of stereotyping, misrepresenting, and underrepresenting LGBTQ+ lives in order to gain ratings. Given Elijah’s background as a media producer, his work as a business and intellectual property attorney, his nonprofit experience, and his family connections in broadcasting, Elijah set out to change that by creating the Qchella Media Corporation—the first LGBTQ+ created, directed, and managed nonprofit media corporation.

Elijah ventured to Palm Springs, Calif., to speak with community leaders and businesses, and worked to bring together a robust coalition of LGBTQ+ experts who were willing to help bring Qchella Media to life. As a LGBTQ+ destination, Palm Springs was the perfect place to base this new nonprofit venture and make a difference for the expansive and diverse Coachella Valley LGBTQ+ community. After months of collaboration with community leaders and LGBTQ+ businesses, including Sunnylands Broadcasting, LLC, Gay Desert Guide, and the Desert Business Association, Qchella Media Corporation was formed.

We believe that LGBTQ+ lives are strengthened and affirmed when our stories are told. As a nonprofit corporation, we work to support and foster the diverse voices of our LGBTQ+ community. We are privileged to create a platform that provides a voice to all LGTBQ+ people, and to support the coalition of LGBTQ+ owned and friendly nonprofits, businesses, professionals, and corporations all working promote the health, education, and the strength of our diverse and varied community.
