Eighteen years later, Kelly Nolan’s killer has never been caught.

Kelly had recently lost her father. Hoping for a fresh start, she moved from Waunakee to downtown Madison to finish her senior year at UW–Whitewater.

On June 23, 2007, Kelly spent time at Memorial Union before going out to several downtown bars with friends. When the night ended, her friends went home—but Kelly chose to stay out.

While walking later that night, a man joined Kelly and one of her friends and offered to walk Kelly home. The friend from the café left the area. That man was the last known person seen with Kelly Nolan.

There is no surveillance video showing who Kelly last spoke to or left with.

Kelly was reported missing the next day. Searches included Lake Mendota, the UW campus, and surrounding areas. In the early morning hours of June 24, Kelly made her last phone call to her sister. Cell tower data later gave detectives a general location.

Sixteen days later, on July 9, 2007, Kelly’s body was found on private property in the Town of Dunn—about 11 miles from where she disappeared—near the 4700 block of Schneider Drive, northeast of the Village of Oregon.

Her death certificate was later updated to show she died from homicidal violence, caused by blunt force trauma to the torso with fractures.

A reward of up to $25,000 was once offered for information leading to an arrest. Investigators continue to follow leads, including one that took them out of state in 2011. Kelly’s case has also been featured on playing cards distributed in jails and prisons to generate tips.

No one has ever been arrested

In November 1985, 27-year-old Susan Lynn Dawson vanished shortly after moving from Winnipeg to the small community of Neville, Saskatchewan.

Susan had recently started working as a live-in housekeeper for a local man named Terry Murphy. On the night of November 12, 1985, she was reportedly attending a small gathering at the home where she was staying.

That was the last confirmed time anyone saw Susan alive.

Just two days later, tragedy struck when the house exploded, killing Murphy instantly. Investigators later confirmed there was no evidence Susan had been inside the home at the time of the blast.

As the years passed, investigators became increasingly convinced that Susan’s disappearance involved foul play. Murphy has long remained a central figure in the investigation.

Several disturbing details continue to surround the case:

• Susan had recently spoken with family members in Winnipeg and appeared happy and optimistic about her future.
• A rental vehicle connected to Murphy was later discovered to have travelled nearly 300 kilometres after Susan disappeared. Investigators also found a bullet hole in the trunk.
• Murphy reportedly had a history involving firearms-related offences and had allegedly threatened to destroy the house before the explosion.
• Susan’s own vehicle was later found abandoned outside a local business, with her purse still inside the back seat.
• Susan’s remains have never been found.
• Her blue heeler/Australian cattle dog also vanished without a trace.

Nearly 40 years later, Susan Dawson’s family is still searching for answers.

A 14-Year-Old Girl Vanished on Her Way Home — Her Killer Has Never Been Identified

More than four decades later, the murder of 14-year-old Dana Bradley remains one of Newfoundland and Labrador’s most haunting unsolved cases.

On December 14, 1981, Dana was last seen hitchhiking along Topsail Road in St. John’s after visiting a friend’s house following school. She was trying to get home in time for her mother’s birthday celebration. Witnesses later reported seeing Dana enter a vehicle driven by an unidentified man.

She never arrived home.

Four days later, a family searching for a Christmas tree discovered Dana’s body on Maddox Cove Road, south of St. John’s. Investigators determined she had suffered a fatal skull fracture. In a chilling detail, her school books had been carefully placed beneath her arm.

Over the years, police pursued countless leads and the case captured national attention.

In 1986, a local man named David Somerton confessed to Dana’s murder, only to later retract his confession, claiming police pressure. He was eventually convicted of mischief related to the false confession, and later DNA testing ruled him out completely.

Then in 2014, a man came forward claiming he had witnessed Dana’s murder as a child. His statement led investigators to excavate two buried vehicles, but no evidence linked them to the crime. The suspect named by the witness was also excluded through DNA evidence.

In 2016, investigators revealed a major breakthrough: advances in forensic science had produced a DNA profile from an unknown male believed to be Dana’s killer.

But to this day, that person has never been identified.

Dana Bradley’s family has waited more than 40 years for answers. Investigators still hope modern genetic genealogy and new forensic technology could finally uncover the truth behind her murder.
