Treating sore hocks.
We are 5 days post treatment and I’d say sooo much better.

Resting mats and clean cages help prevent these things.
Unfortunately this rabbit came to me in this condition. But he’s mostly healed, still tender. I’ll be keeping an eye on it. Had to shave down the area around the sore to treat it.

COLOR OF EGG YOLK AND WHAT IT SAYS ABOUT THE CHICKEN

Pale yellow yolks usually come from chickens fed mostly grains like wheat or white corn. The diet is basic, and the birds likely don’t have access to greens or pigments.

Bright yellow yolks point to a diet with corn or alfalfa, which naturally add more color through plant pigments.

Deep orange yolks are from chickens that eat lots of carotenoid-rich foods—like red peppers, marigolds, leafy greens, and bugs out in the pasture. These hens live a fuller, richer life.

White or gray yolks can mean poor diet or a stressed bird. Something might be off—maybe health, maybe feed.

The color tells a story about what the chicken eats and how it lives, not how nutritious the egg is. So the deeper the hue, the better the tale.

Our girls might be slowing down in this heat. But that doesn’t mean we don’t have eggs to sell 😊

🥚💡 Why Are Some Eggs Blue or Green? (Hint: It’s in Their DNA)

Not all chicken eggs are tan, brown, or white — and the reason comes down to genetics 🧬

The blue egg gene (called oocyan) causes a special blue pigment to be deposited throughout the eggshell, not just on the surface. That’s why even the inside of a blue egg’s shell is blue!

🐔 If a chicken has:
• Only the blue gene → It lays blue eggs
• Blue + brown pigment genes → It lays green or olive eggs
• No blue gene → It lays white, tan, or brown eggs depending on other pigments

🎨 The green you see on olive eggs? That’s brown pigment layered over a blue shell!

🧬 Want to know if your chicken carries the blue egg gene — even if it hasn’t laid an egg yet?
We offer a DNA test that tells you if they’re:
✔️ A carrier (one copy)
✔️ Homozygous (two copies)
✔️ Or not carrying the gene at all

Morning Crunch: Harvest Timing for Perfect Cucumbers 🥒
• Harvesting in hot hours (9 A.M.–5 P.M.) makes cucumbers limp and bitter
• Evening picking leads to excess moisture and fast spoilage
• For crisp, juicy cucumbers, pick early when vines are cool and fully hydrated

Tips:
• Pick cucumbers early morning when vines are cool
• Midday harvest = limp, watery fruits
• Morning cuts stay crunchy and store longer
