A sold-out audience of over 6,500 women attended the 3rd Annual Watermark Conference for Women Silicon Valley held on February 1 in San Jose, CA. Watermark is the largest conference for women in California and is dedicated to increasing the number of women in leadership positions in the workplace. Facebook COO and “Lean In” author Sheryl Sandberg, Oscar-nominated actress Viola Davis, and former U.S. Secretaries of State Madeleine K. Albright and Condoleezza Rice delivered keynote addresses to spread the inspiration. The conference also featured a Gilead Career Pavilion with resume reviews and career coaching, breakout sessions, and small business and social media roundtables.

Coming days after the historic Women’s March, the nonpartisan, nonprofit conference gave attendees the opportunity to hear powerful keynotes from remarkable women leaders of different backgrounds who agreed on many issues including the need for women to lead, to support each other, and to amplify their voice.

Themed "The Power of Us: Amplify Your Voice," the opening keynote featured a discussion between Sheryl Sandberg and Kara Swisher, executive editor for Recode. While initially criticized for her absence and silence during the Women’s March, Sandberg delivered a message of female empowerment to the thousands of women attendees, “Women: We need you to lead. We need your voices at the table.” Sandberg expressed regret for not being able to attend the Women’s March and remarked that, “This was an incredible showing of support for women all around the world, and it shows that there are so many people out there not just in the U.S., but globally, who really believe in equality for women.” Sandberg further remarked that a dialogue with the Trump administration is necessary and that she remains hopeful that gender equality will prevail, “No matter how challenging it looks, history is on our side. Lean in harder. We will get there.”

The afternoon keynote featured two female history makers of different political backgrounds and longtime friends who seemed to agree on many issues – including America’s role in the world and the need for women to support each other. Former U.S. Secretaries of State Madeleine K. Albright and Condoleezza Rice both expressed opposition to Trump’s immigration ban of Muslim-majority countries. Rice, who served George W. Bush’s administration and was National Security Advisor on September 11, 2001, called the ban “ill-considered and badly delivered,” while still urging the audience to give American political leaders “a chance to work.” Albright, who served Bill Clinton’s administration and made history as the first female Secretary of State, was less forgiving and said the new policy is “one of the worst things that has happened in an administration that is only a week old” and that “it has hurt us and made us less safe in so many different ways.” She said the ban was the work of an “unprepared” administration that “did not look at the unintended consequences” of the order. Both women closed their talk with words of advice for women. Rice encouraged attendees to never let people look at you and tell you what your passion should be. Albright said, “I wish that women helped each other more. There is a special place in hell for women who don’t help each other,” adding “that doesn’t apply to voting because I would never vote for Sarah Palin.”

Viola Davis, winner of Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards for Best Actress this year for her appearance in “Fences,” shared lessons with attendees about her inspiring rise from a background of extreme poverty and violence to stardom on film, television and stage, “Nothing in life will do you any good if you don’t own your own story.” Davis talk about her long struggle with loving herself and acknowledged that she has only started to feel “really confident” only in the past few years. She closed her talk by addressing the young women in the young audience, “And to the young people out here…I always say because I know what it means to be 16, you feel like who am I? Gawky? Or overly confident? But not really, just awkward? Just remember that what the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the master calls the butterfly. You are enough. That is my gift to you.”

The Third Annual Watermark Conference for Women Silicon Valley will feature keynote addresses from Tony and Emmy Award-winning actress Viola Davis, Facebook Chief Operating Officer and “Lean In” author Sheryl Sandberg, and former U.S. Secretaries of State Madeleine K. Albright and Condoleezza Rice on Wednesday, February 1st at the San Jose Convention Center. Annie Clark, co-founder of End R**e on Campus and subject of the documentary film “The Hunting Ground," and Shawn Achor, best-selling author of "The Happiness Advantage” and record-setting TED speaker, will also headline the third annual conference, with more than 6,000 expected to attend.

Sheryl Sandberg is Chief Operating Officer at Facebook, overseeing the firm's business operations. Prior to Facebook, Sandberg was Vice President of Global Online Sales and Operations at Google, chief of staff for the U.S. Treasury Department under President Clinton, a management consultant with McKinsey & Company, and an economist with the World Bank. Sandberg is the best-selling author of "Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead" and "Lean In for Graduates" and founder of LeanIn.Org, a global community committed to empowering all women to achieve their ambitions.

Viola Davis currently stars in the hit ABC drama "How to Get Away with Murder," for which she became the first African American to win the Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama Series and also earned two Screen Actors Guild Awards, an NAACP Image Award, and two Golden Globe nominations. Davis also stars in “Fences” from Paramount Pictures, for which she won the Critics Choice Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress. The film starring, directed, and produced by Denzel Washington is adapted from August Wilson’s Broadway play, for which she won a Tony Award.

Madeleine K. Albright made history as the first female Secretary of State, nominated by President Bill Clinton and unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate in 1997. Prior to her service from 1997-2001, Dr. Albright served as U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 1993 to 1997 and as a member of President Clinton's National Security Council. Dr. Albright is the author of five New York Times best-sellers and she currently serves as chair of Albright Stonebridge Group and as a professor of International Relations at Georgetown University’s Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service. In 2012, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama.

Condoleezza Rice served as the 66th Secretary of State from 2005 to 2009, only the second woman, after Albright, and the first African American woman to hold the position. Previously, Dr. Rice was the first female National Security Advisor, from 2001 to 2005, to President George W. Bush. Currently, Dr. Rice serves as Denning Professor in Global Business and the Economy at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, and is a professor of political science at Stanford University, in addition to being the Thomas and Barbara Stephenson Senior Fellow on Public Policy at the Hoover Institution. She is also a founding partner of RiceHadleyGates, LLC.

Once again, Watermark offers an unparalleled opportunity to hear from accomplished, insightful and game-changing leaders,” said Marlene Williamson, CEO of Watermark. “We are proud to present an unforgettable program that will make a difference for women in Silicon Valley and beyond.”

Named one of the “Top 100” events in the San Francisco Bay Area by BizBash for its “buzz, innovation, and prominence,” the Watermark Conference for Women offers an unmatched breadth and depth of speakers in fields including new approaches to leadership, gender equity and inclusion, business management, digital strategy, and personal and professional growth. "Our stellar lineup of speakers represent a diverse array of individuals from politics and entertainment to global diplomacy and education," said Amy Flood, Vice President, Public Affairs of co-chair sponsor Gilead Sciences. "Gilead is honored to celebrate the full spectrum of women's achievements at the Conference and throughout the year."
