Could the technology used to deter sharks inspire a safer way to keep bears out of populated areas? 🐻🌊

Scientists have developed shark deterrents that create electromagnetic or pulsed electric fields. Sharks have an incredibly sensitive electrosensory system, so these fields can disrupt their approach and encourage them to move away—without killing them.

That made me wonder: could we apply the same principle to bears?

Bears don’t have the same electroreceptors sharks do, so you couldn’t simply copy the technology. But researchers could potentially identify specific sensory signals—sound frequencies, vibrations, electromagnetic signals or combinations of stimuli—that bears find uncomfortable and use them to create a non-lethal “virtual boundary.”

Imagine strategically placed sensors recognizing when a bear approaches a crowded trail, neighborhood or downtown area and automatically activating a targeted deterrent. Once the bear moves away, it turns off.

Wildlife managers already use aversive conditioning, including noise, to discourage bears from entering human spaces. What interests me is whether technology could make that process smarter, more precise and preventative.

Instead of waiting until a bear becomes habituated, aggressive or ultimately has to be euthanized, could we encourage it to stay in safer habitat from the beginning?

Shark deterrent technology shows that understanding an animal’s sensory biology can lead to completely new approaches to coexistence.

Maybe we should be exploring the same idea for bears. 🐻❤️🌲

Happy Labor Day to all the hard workers out there! 🇺🇸✨

Did you know the history behind Labor Day? I didn’t either. It was created to recognize the contributions, achievements, and sacrifices of American workers—and it made me think about how much meaningful work happens when nobody is watching.

People are quietly building businesses, creating new ideas, solving problems, and working toward something they believe in—sometimes without recognition or anyone knowing- while others in tech and business are studying those journeys for inspiration. You never really know who your hard work might inspire. 💡

Thank you, Bonnie Raitt, for reminding us why peace matters—and why love can be a decision, not just a feeling. ☮️❤️ Although your music definitely brings up plenty of feelings for people trying to improve the peace nature, the ocean and what it gives us does inside.

And thank you, Jan Blomqvist—so great to meet you! 🎶 My favorite song of yours is “More,” and such a good reminder that more of everything isn’t always what we need. Sometimes knowing what’s enough is just as important as knowing what you’re working toward. ❤️

Happy Labor Day! Here’s to hard work, creativity, innovation, love, great music, and a little more peace in the world. ✨

I used to hate thinking about what I was going to wear because I thought it was a waste of time. Now I love it—mostly because I’m not spending hours stuck behind a computer screen!
Lately, I’ve been diving into a whole new side of style that actually feels meaningful. Imagine combining sustainable materials and high fashion together—specifically, elements sourced straight from the ocean! 🌊👗
From ocean plastic spun into sleek streetwear to seaweed yarns and upcycled fish leather, the future of fashion is taking shape underwater. Choosing what to wear becomes a lot more inspiring when your outfit is literally cleaning the seas and cutting down on carbon waste.

So excited to start September with a little giving back. 🤍🍂

Some wonderful women recently dropped off clothes at the place where I work, and it inspired me to go through my own closet and donate a big collection of clothing to Response.

For anyone unfamiliar with it, Response is a local nonprofit serving survivors of domestic and sexual abuse, stalking, and human trafficking in the upper Roaring Fork Valley. They provide resources including crisis intervention, advocacy, safe housing, counseling, financial assistance, safety planning, and other support to help survivors move toward safety and independence.

Sometimes something sitting unused in our closet can be meaningful to someone going through a major transition in life. If you’re doing a little September cleaning, consider finding a local organization where your clothes or other resources can make a difference. 💜

Learn more about Response and ways to support its mission.

Happy September! ✨
