“Fun Facts About Panama City Beach”
1. Panama City has one of the highest concentrations of wild bottlenose dolphins in the world 🐬. You’ll most commonly see them off the coast of Shell Island (one of my favorite spots). There are a bunch of local excursions that will take you out on dolphin cruises, but I always recommend taking a trip out to Shell Island to enjoy the day!
2. PCB is actually known as the Wreck Capital of the South. 🚢 Many ships wreck in the Gulf, and one of the most famous is the Empire Mica – a British tanker that was torpedoed by a German U-boat in 1942.
3. Panama City Beach is home to the Man in the Sea Museum - the only Deep Sea Diving Museum in the world! Between the shipwrecks and the amazing marine life off the coast of PCB, I highly recommend taking up scuba diving as a hobby. The best time to go diving is April through September. 🌊
4. PCB is one of the top Spring Break destinations in the US! Our population grows by almost half a million every March when students flock to the coast to enjoy our beautiful weather and beaches. It may get a little busy, but it’s definitely a bonus to our local economy. 🌱
5. St Andrews State Park, located on Shell Island near Panama City Beach, has been ranked as one of the top 10 beaches in the United States. This area is unique because it has four different habitats – lake, deciduous forest, sand dunes, and ocean. Pretty cool! If you love to camp or are looking for a little weekend retreat, I highly recommend the campgrounds at St Andrews State Park. You can wake up to beautiful views of the lagoon and walk on the beach! 🏖️
6. While not often thought of as swimmers, whitetail deer are adept enough in the water to make the seemingly perilous crossing from St Andrews State Park to Shell Island! Often making the trek for fresh foliage, they are known to surprise many boaters.
7. PCB is famous for its beautiful (and cool) white sand beaches. These white beaches get their color from quartz crystals that washed down from the Appalachian Mountains centuries ago. The long traveling distance and years of wave action broke down the crystals to make the sugary white, soft sand that is on the beach today. It’s also the reason why the water is that beautiful tone of emerald green. 🏖️
8. Panama City Beach enjoys an average of 320 sunny days a year! ☀️
9. As mentioned above, PCB is famous for its Emerald Coast. The fancy scientific reason is the sun reflecting off the quartz sand bottom of the Gulf, which makes the water a green tint. The color comes through so clearly because there are no rivers running into the Gulf!
10. Our beautiful beaches and amazing weather make it clear why over 5,000 tourists visit PCB every single day!
11. Charter fishing is one of the most popular activities in Panama City Beach! On a charter boat you can catch tuna, blue marlin, snarks, red snapper, and many more! Our local favorite is Semper Fi Charters And Tours. 🎣
12. Every year since 1999, the Florida Ironman Triathlon is hosted in Panama City Beach. Every year, amazing athletes from around the world come in to compete. It’s a lot of fun to watch and cheer them on! 🏊 🚴🏃
13. Because of the plentiful amounts of seafood restaurants, Panama City Beach is also known as the Seafood Capital of the South! From Schooner’s to Dat Cajun Place to The Grand Marlin of Panama City Beach – so many amazing local places to enjoy.
14. PCB is home to over 100 public beach access points. Many provide parking and all provide plenty of free access to enjoy the sun and sand!
It’s no wonder so many people want to move to Panama City Beach - it’s our little slice of Heaven on Earth!
