So, if you’ve ever wondered whether you can run a full PA system and DJ controller from the factory power outlet in a 2013 Ford F-150… the answer is yes. That said, I absolutely do not recommend it. Even with power conditioning, the outlet isn’t properly grounded for professional audio equipment.
Normally, I would never attempt something like this. But last night, while providing DJ services for a client’s wedding, the entire venue lost power due to high winds—right in the middle of the toasts, before the couple had even shared their first dance.
I felt terrible for them. We had already been forced to move the ceremony indoors because of the weather, and the couple and their entire wedding party had traveled all the way from Oklahoma to Colorado for their big day.
Having worked as a professional home inspector for seven years, my first instinct was to start troubleshooting the electrical system. After checking the panels and realizing the building was fed by an 800-amp commercial service, I knew there wasn’t much I could do.
That left me with one option: my trusty old F-150.
I grabbed a couple of 100-foot extension cords, ran them out to the truck, and honestly didn’t expect it to work. To my surprise, it powered my entire PA system and DJ setup without issue. I let the truck idle for about two hours, and it kept everything running long enough for the couple to have their first dance and enjoy the rest of their reception until the power was able to be restored.
Needless to say, I’ll be carrying one of my backup generators to every wedding from now on. Hopefully I’ll never need it, but after last night I’d rather have it and not need it than the other way around.
Sorry for the long story, but it was one heck of an evening—and I’m grateful we were able to help save such an important moment for a great couple.
