The Sharp Notes

The Sharp Notes A record store, podcast and music journal featuring interviews, reviews, and more.

Evan Toth, singer-songwriter, musician, and radio host, presents "Garden State Sound" which airs on Friday afternoons from 4:00pm to 5:00pm (EST). The hour-long, weekly program will stream live on WFDU-FM (www.wfdu.fm) and through other streaming outlets such as Tunein.com and IHeartRadio.com. Garden State Sound will feature musicians and music with connections to the state of New Jersey, music ab

out the state, and concert ticket giveaways to some of the greatest musical events in New Jersey.

“New Jersey has an astonishingly rich musical history and an extremely vibrant present,” says Toth, “unfortunately, there are not many outlets which focus solely on the Garden State.” Toth, host of the Good Music program which ran for nearly seven years on WFDU, 89.1 FM, has always shared a wide variety - and sometimes challenging - array of music with his listeners, “I want people to listen to the show and feel forced to perk up to hear what the New Jersey connection might be, listeners should walk away from each program surprised by how much music is produced with connections to the Garden State.” New Jersey musical legends will be on tap, but plenty of new talent will also be represented. Toth will also utilize his casual and intimate interview style and feature conversations with NJ music-makers. His history as a New Jersey musician gives him a unique perspective into the regional voice of New Jersey and what makes it stand out from the rest of the world. Wherever they may travel, New Jerseyans always have a voice of their own; Garden State Sound aims to discover and explore that voice - and sound - through music.

Plenty of incoming goodies now and always. Why did I put the Rascals on top? I don’t know; maybe because the graphic design of Staniław Zargórski appeals to my inherent Eastern European sensibilities.

And - you know - the Rascals. I mean those aren’t all Rascals records; well, you knew that. Or, did you? Imagine if they were all Rascals records: they’re not though.

In any case, stop by: we’re open until 9pm.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, 10/14 author Jude Warne will join us for an in-store discussion about her music writing and more. This is an in-person/free event and if you're in the NJ/NYC area, it's a great opportunity to hear her excellent perspectives and perhaps ask a few questions of your own.

Of course, following the chat, we'll be spinning both Boz and America!

Come on out and join us this Wednesday night at 6pm!

A live, in-store conversation event with author Jude Warne to discuss her latest books on Boz Scaggs, America, and more.

Where does that hallway lead? Oh, who knows? Maybe it’s a portal into the mind games that Lennon was talking about on this underrated 1973 release. You never know where those mall hallways and backrooms lead anyway, do you? In any case, we wish John a very happy birthday wherever he is in the cosmic universe.

The Zombies' Odessey and Oracle—a psych-pop landmark—gets its first U.S. mono reissue. Colin Blunstone joins Evan Toth for a candid conversation about what creating the album meant to the band, and how it transformed from overlooked swan song to one of rock’s most celebrated masterpieces.

It’s been a real pleasure—and an honor—to write for Michael Fremer at The Tracking Angle (and before that, at his previous venture). I was just saying to him that we’ve known each other for nearly a decade, and in that time I’ve learned a great deal from him.

It was wonderful to see Michael at The Sharp Notes’ Grand Opening last weekend, and his article about the event truly captures the spirit of the day. Thank you, Michael—and if you couldn’t be there, his piece perfectly conveys the mood and energy of the celebration. Read it all at TrackingAngle.com.
