It’s called “One Day at a Time” and it’s from Season 2 of the podcast made inside the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla.

Get to know our people! Q&A with Matt Sheppard 🎤

SOMETHING I’M PROUD OF:
I did a story called “My Proudest Moment.” It is about performing stand-up comedy in San Quentin. But I’m really proud of my daughter, Ma’kiya. I’ve been incarcerated her whole life and she just got her Master’s degree in social work. I’m so proud of her!

SOMETHING UNIQUE ABOUT ME:
As a kid, I had a lisp and used to occasionally stutter. So, I am happy to be able to tell radio stories and do stand-up comedy. My “impediments” are now the thing that people recognize and love about me, and I love that the people who know me know my voice.

MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING PART OF UNCUFFED:
I love it when people tell me their story and the real good storytellers allow me to share in their emotion. As a person who spent most of my life (to this point) in a prison, hearing stories allowed me to live vicariously through others.

MY HOPES FOR THE FUTURE:
I want to continue to grow as a podcast producer, audio engineer, filmmaker, and entertainer. I believe that Uncuffed has helped me open doors that will lead to a bright future and now I hope to be able to open similar doors for future Uncuffed alumni.

AN UNCUFFED STORY I RECOMMEND:
I really love the story “Hole in the Heart” produced by Anthony Ivy. It’s a love story that reminds me of the people I grew up with in prison and prior to prison. It’s an amazing story that I can listen to over and over again.

What is it like to run a whole marathon inside a prison? Turns out, getting through a grueling 26 miles has some things in common with getting through a lengthy sentence.

Episode 2 of the new season of Uncuffed drops July 29.
