TRAILBLAZERS: Olympic rower Kate Johnson on girls in sport, leadership, and life after cancer

PARK CITY, Utah — When Olympic silver medalist and tech executive Kate Johnson finished treatment for stage 3 breast cancer, she and her husband made a decision that didn’t look safe on paper. They left his 20-plus-year medical practice in California, bet on the possibility of remote work, and moved their two boys to Park City — a place they mostly knew through ski trips, trail time, and a tight circle of friends....

Park City approves Clark Ranch conservation easement, limits housing site to 10 acres

PARK CITY, Utah — After months of public debate and delays in city approval, the Park City Council has unanimously approved an updated conservation easement for the city-owned Clark Ranch property. The decision permanently protects 329 acres of the 344-acre site as open space. The remaining 15 acres are currently excluded from the easement due to a proposed housing project led by Wisconsin-based The Alexander Company....

Park City Curling Club season start, just a stone’s throw away

PARK CITY, Utah — The Park City Ice Arena plays host venue to many different sports; that said, no one is having as much fun, arguably, as the participants of the Park City Curling Club. The new season starts in January, plenty of time to sign up between now and then. There are also the Learn-To-Curl clinics held throughout the year....

An ode in ink

There’s a yeti skiing in a beanie. A snowcat grooming trails on a snowcat. A blaster in a mining cart, a flower that nods to the Banksy painting on Main Street, and a High West whiskey bottle skating over the Main Street bridge. Some people say they love Park City; Stephanie Schweitzer, owner of Schweitzer Designs, tattooed it on her back....

New state map shows which Utah homes will pay wildfire mitigation fee

UTAH — A new Utah law requiring some homeowners in wildfire-prone areas to pay an annual fee is moving into its next phase, as the state has finalized a map identifying which properties fall within high-risk wildfire zones. House Bill 48 directs the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands to identify areas where development meets wilderness, known as the wildland-urban interface (WUI), and assess an annual wildfire mitigation fee on properties deemed most at risk....

Mobile Market rescues food, feeds families — no questions asked

PARK CITY, Utah — On Saturday mornings, the fellowship hall at Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church transforms from meeting room to pop-up produce aisle. Volunteers arrive around 9 a.m. to set up tables. By 9:15, "rescuers" begin unloading crates of what Shelby Cornett calls "really colorful, beautiful food that would otherwise go into the landfill." Cornett, Waste Less Solutions’ Summit County food waste coordinator, said the Mobile Market — part of the nonprofit’s Summit County expansion supported in part by a Park City Community Foundation Climate Fund grant tied to its Zero Food Waste efforts — has been piloted twice so far, with about 10 families coming through last weekend....
