THE FIRST EIGHT HOURS were the best eight hours, when I still believed my l***y dreams would be fulfilled. Among the Amish, where I was born and raised, and up on Northstar, where I spent the better part two years, I’d marinated in high-octane fantasies of flesh and hair and spurting fluids, buttocks, breasts, and breathy whimpers, pelvis, scapulas, and collarbones, but I’d known that I was fantasizing....

So yes, cheetah-print carpet did whine something sensual as I pressed into it, coaxing me further upstairs because Is this what everyone else knew about? Hotels, spaces, glamorous enough for one’s own reinvention? because who really belongs here but the sharpened spiders crawling along the roof we peek over, fairy lights cutting their silhouette? Later, in a ballroom cast in soft red and jazz, …...

IF YOU'VE EVER WANTED to know if you’re one in a million – just flip a coin. More specifically, flip a coin twenty times and have Heads come up consecutively; well, then, you’re of that rarified air. That’s how Eerum Upso saw it. And where he sat, comfortable but afraid, he couldn’t trust anything anymore, anything that could give it to him straight, except Math....

MY FIRST LOOK AT at the new girl that Jack pushes through the cabin door ahead of him reveals that she is slim, with hair as black as mine but long and wavy. She is perhaps a full decade younger than my twenty-seven, and her skin is pale to my dark brown. She is hyperventilating. She hasn’t, I think in that moment, experienced anything like this before....

THE SHOW WAS UTTERLY and unapologetically high-budget trash. That was practically its title. Its actual title was For Love Within Reason. The premise was that an elderly king had three sons, all of whom had married good and sensible wives. The king had ten grandchildren—played by attractive actors in their twenties—who were allowed a bit of leeway in choosing their own spouses....

THE EVER-PRESENT TEMPTATION to water down the Jim Beam flitted through Miri's mind as she turned the emptying bottle bottom-up. The sloped interior of the shot glass stared up at her, only half-brown. "Hold on, sweetie," said Miri. Her eyes did not roll but her voice did. Hers was a medium-low voice sanded down by Marlboro 27s and time. Her customer, a bearded man in denim, looked as if he had been sanded down by something worse....

The day the fox staggered into the barn my father didn’t own a gun, his whole life, a pacifist, with no desire to harm, or hunt, or defend with force. At the time, I saw this as a failure of character, as a listless boat floating without hope of shore, hated his inability to kill, to watch his entire barn infected, …...
