More than 700 people from 36 countries gathered in Lviv on May 14-16 for the 12th annual Lviv Media Forum, one of Eastern Europe's largest media conferences. Held under the theme "Reality Under Attack: Flight, Freeze, or Fight?,” the forum focused on the role of journalism in wartime, with keynote remarks delivered by Maksym Butkevych, a Ukrainian human rights defender and journalist who spent more than two years in Russian captivity.

Ukraine reburied Andriy Melnyk, a colonel in the Army of the Ukrainian People's Republic and a leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, at the National Military Memorial Cemetery outside Kyiv on May 25, marking the first honorary reburial of a fighter for Ukrainian independence at the site. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attended the ceremony alongside senior state officials, beginning what he said was the beginning of a broader effort to return prominent Ukrainians buried abroad.

Russia launched one of its heaviest attacks of the war against Kyiv on May 24, striking the capital with 90 missiles and 600 drones, killing at least three people and wounding more than 90. Nearly 300 sites were damaged across every district of the city, including the National Chornobyl Museum, residential buildings, schools and cultural institutions. For the first time, Russia fired an Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile at the Kyiv region.

President Zelenskyy called for an international response, while European leaders condemned the strike as a further escalation of Russia's full-scale war.

French-Spanish actor Jean Reno, known for his roles in "Léon: The Professional" and "Mission: Impossible," has published a new spy thriller inspired by Russia's deportation of Ukrainian children. Titled "L'Évasion" ("Escape"), the novel follows an intelligence operative who goes undercover in Siberia to investigate camps holding deported Ukrainian teenagers — a storyline Reno said was directly prompted by reports of over 19,000 Ukrainian children abducted by Russia during the war.
