In this episode I taco 'bout my journey from accepting Jesus as my Lord and Savior to being called into ministry. We all have ebenezers in our lives we just have to take the time to allow the Holy Spirit to reveal them to us.

Isaiah 53:3-4
He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted.

I’m filled with sorrow. I feel grief. Just thinking is exhausting. When someone dies, these emotions arise. Isaiah is speaking about Jesus in this passage. Though I want to focus on sorrow and grief. When I feel sorrow and grief, I often want to retreat within myself or try and medicate with addiction. I wonder if you can relate to that?

But, Isaiah tells us that Jesus is a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. Then he goes on to share a great truth. He says, “Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows.” Therefore, I do not need to carry my sorrow and grief on my shoulders. Jesus is close to the brokenhearted and crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18). I want to encourage you, believers, to allow the Lord to move in your life in times of sorrow and grief. Draw close to Him because He’s already close to you, for those who do not know the Lord. Jesus is not unfamiliar with your hurts. Please come to Him, and He will give you rest.

1 John 1:9 (AMP)
9 If we [freely] admit that we have sinned and confess our sins, He is faithful and just [true to His own nature and promises], and will forgive our sins and cleanse us continually from all unrighteousness [our wrongdoing, everything not in conformity with His will and purpose].

John calls the believer to admit our sin freely. He reminds us that Jesus is faithful and just to forgive our sins. Now, I, at times, find this incredibly hard to do. I know what it’s like to keep my sin to myself as if God could not see it. Though, I believe I was trying to keep it from people so they wouldn’t have some negative view of me. Every time I’ve kept something secret, I have felt the full force of the shame that came with it.

But, John reminds us that it’s in Jesus’ nature and promises to forgive us. Not only forgive us but thoroughly cleanse us. We as believers must remember that this is a continual process until we go to be with the Lord or He returns. If this is so, shouldn’t we get used to the practice of confessing our sin? Yes, confess your sin to God and confess your sin to others. Some of the most freedom I’ve experienced is when I’ve shared my relapses with my recovery group. Is it enjoyable at the time? No way! But, it’s so much rewarding afterward.

Jeremiah 17:7-8
7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is the Lord. 8 For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, which spreads out its roots by the river, and will not fear when heat comes; but its leaf will be green, and will not be anxious in the year of drought, nor will cease from yielding fruit.

A person who trusts in the Lord is blessed, not blessed if things line up according to plan. Trusting in the Lord requires surrender, humility, faith, hope to name a few. We do this through prayer, reading the Word, worship, fellowship. We need to be planted next to the living water.

Jeremiah reminds us that trust in the Lord is not just when things are going well. He uses the imagery of heat and drought. I know all too well what a desert heat is like. It’s super uncomfortable. The heat of the desert does not subside when the sun goes down; it’s still hot and miserable. Jeremiah tells us if we are rooted next to the living water, we will not be anxious during the troublesome times in our lives. We will thrive and not stop bearing fruit. Praise God for that.

Romans 15:13
“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

What is filling you up today?

I’m often running on sheer willpower. “I just need to get to the weekend!” So I’ve often told myself and others. Maybe the workweek has been brutal, and it was only Monday. Perhaps my marriage is in the midst of an argument, or my kids have found my last nerve and are on a mission to destroy it. But for me, it could even be I’m just struggling to maintain my sobriety. We in recovery call that white-knuckling.

Willpower cannot get us through. Yes, we might finish the week or whatever we need to get through. But, how are we at the end? I got through the workweek, but I might have snapped at a student or two. I got my wife to admit she was wrong, but things are still rocky. I may have found relief from my kids but at the cost of not engaging with them and creating new memories. I got through another week of sobriety, but I’m starting to see recovery as a burden and not worth doing.

The believer in Christ can not rely on willpower. Paul prays that “the God of hope” will fill us “all joy and peace.” I heard a pastor once say that happiness depends on happenings. Joy is not dependent on any outward circumstance. I truly believe that joy and peace come directly from the Lord. Paul tells us that this joy and peace will allow us to abound in hope; hope exists in large quantities. Finally, Paul reminds us that the power of the Holy Spirit continually replenishes this hope.

What has been filling you up lately? My hope for you all is that if it’s not the Lord filling you, you would surrender control and let the Holy Spirit bless you with joy and peace. If you don’t know Jesus Christ as your savior, reach out to me, and I’d love to hear your story.
