Surprised my goth girlfriend with dinner at a real Mexican church reconstructed as a restaurant. The pulpit is now the bar. The baroque pews are the seats. Stained glass on every wall. Flickering Santa Maria candles. Dark cobblestone floors. The Chef JosĆ© Cepeda grew up in Puebla cooking with his grandmother and now heās serving huitlacoche tamal and Oaxacan fondue in what used to be a house of God.
The dining room is divided into heaven, purgatory, and hell. You pick where you sit.
This is inside the Lafayette Hotel in North Park. The same hotel with the Tarzan pool, the 24/7 diner, and the bowling alley.
