- Rare Japanese Maple Shigarami 9-10ft tall, 13 years old.

'Shigarami' leafs out in the early spring with a heavily divided bright green leaf that highlighted with a rich purple red border. When given protection from the hot afternoon sun, this border holds well into the summer. The photo above was taken in early June.

In the fall, 'Shigarami' starts out as bright yellow, slowly changing to a bright orange. To finish this fall display, hints of fire engine red engulf the terminal branching overtop of the bright oranges and yellows. This selection has a strong central leader that grows upward, while the side branching becomes more lateral. 'Shigarami' will reach 10-12 ft by 8-10 ft in width in 15 years. This uncommon selection is truly unique and a great addition as a focal point or an accent planting for nearly any garden.

The ‘Bloodgood’ Japanese maple is a classic upright red. This is the Japanese maple that made Japanese maples famous in America. Oddly enough the name 'Bloodgood' came from the family name of the owners of Bloodgood Nursery in New York and had nothing to do with its red color. Fortunately, the name fit this lovely red Japanese maple. 'Bloodgood' is extremely beautiful. This tree leafs out in the spring with bright red leaves which develop to deep maroon red. This red color provides dynamic contrast in the garden throughout the spring, summer and especially in the autumn. The fall color intensifies brighter in the fall often displaying shades of oranges and reds which will grab anyone's attention and make your yard look spectacular.

'Red Bird' is a red Japanese maple with an upright habit, but a less spreading habit than other red matsumurae Japanese maples. This upright narrow form along with sharply divided foliage is where 'Red Bird' gets its name. Fall color ranges from crimson red to scarlet red.

- Extremely Rare Acer Robustum 10-11ft tall, 20 years old.

Acer robustum, also known as Acer ceriferum, is an extremely rare maple in section palmata, series palmata. The leaves of this Chinese maple are extremely round, almost like a full-moon maple, with more pubescence in the early spring. Specimens of Acer ceriferum are once again growing in Chapel Hill, NC and Philadelphia, PA making this mid-sized tree very hardy and a great tree for the landscape. Acer robustum also appears to be fairly frost resistant. Fall colors are outstanding neon yellows to orange. Recently Peter Gregory published a paper on Acer robustum through the Maple Society's Open Science initiative that stated that Acer robostum should technically be referred to as Acer anhweiense.

-Super Rare: Okushimo Japanese Curly Maple 9ft tall, 15 years old. Very slow grow specie.

First discover centuries ago in Japan, but having only somewhat recently made its way to the America, 'Okushimo' is a very unique selection with outstanding form, texture and color. It has a upright habit with a vase shape reaching maybe 20 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide which allows it to be tucked into smaller spaces in landscape borders, home foundation plantings and around patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces. Perhaps what's most unusual about Okushimo are its leaves, which begin to distinctively curl inward at the edges of the lobes. We're not sure why they curl as they do, but it sure does look cool! Translated to the English language, the name ‘Okushimo’ means “salt and pepper.” We think this has to do with the tiny dimples on the mature leaves. The leaves emerge chartreuse shades in spring on bright red leaf stems transitioning to a handsome dark green in summer and then to shades of yellow and sometimes orange with the arrival of cooler temperatures in fall. An unusually attractive selection that is sure to be a standout and conversation piece
