My 12-year-old son took to the idea of saving money in his bank. For years, he’s been saving most of his birthday money and allowance, and now has over $1,200 in cash. I’m proud of him, but now there’s a problem.

He’s been wanting an iPhone, but we don’t think he’s ready for it yet, and have said, “No.” But now he says, “That’s fine. I’ll buy it for myself.”

I think, as a parent, I have veto rights, but my wife thinks it’s a great lesson for him. He won’t have the money to pay for monthly service. But if we let him buy the phone and he can’t use it, won’t he be disappointed? What should we do?
