As we enter 2026, our reporter Connor Patton has some reflections on his first year working at The Suffolk County News. Thank you to all of our readers for a memorable 2025, and here's to a happy and healthy New Year!

One year ago this week, I graduated from New York University without a clue whether I’d find a job or if I’d ever be able to work in my dream role as a reporter. A few months later, in May …

BREAKING NEWS: NYS Senator Alexis Weik has decided not to seek re-election.
See her letter:

After much reflection, I have made one of the most difficult decisions of my life. After fifteen years of public service, first as Islip’s Receiver of Taxes and later as the proud representative of the 3rd and now the 8th Senate District, I will not be seeking re-election when my term concludes at the end of 2026.
Serving this community has been the honor of a lifetime. Every day of this work has been driven by one purpose…to make life better for the people and families I was elected to serve. I have poured my heart into this role, and I am deeply proud of what we were able to accomplish together.
During my time in office, I fought for legislation to strengthen public safety, reduce the tax burden on families and seniors, and improve the overall quality of life on Long Island. I was also humbled to serve in leadership roles, first as the President of the Receivers Association and now as Secretary of the Senate Minority Conference, a responsibility I carry with great care and respect. Working alongside incredible partners, we were able to see the Browns River dredged, create a natural wetland preserve along its banks, establish the Friends of Heckscher State Park, and push for the creation of the Oakdale Watershed to better protect our environment and our future. These efforts were about more than projects or policies…they were about preserving our communities for generations to come.
This decision comes after careful consideration of my health and my family, who have stood beside me through every long day and every challenge. While I will not be running again, I remain fully committed to serving the people of this district through the remainder of my term. There is still important work ahead, and I intend to finish strong.
I am incredibly grateful to my constituents for their trust and support, to my staff for their dedication and heart, to my colleagues in government for their partnership, and to our law enforcement officers, veterans, seniors, educators, parents, and small business owners who inspire this work every day.
Most of all, I thank my family for their love, patience, and sacrifice, especially my husband Jim. None of this would have been possible without them.
With all of my heart…thank you for allowing me to serve you. It has truly been my greatest honor.

Senator Alexis Weik
