Worst time to shut off your marketing is when you're slammed.

Your marketing is a lead indicator of what's to come in 3-6 months.

It might feel like the smartest decision now but you will always pay for it in the future.

You're losing jobs before you even know you're in the running.

When someone Googles a contractor in your area, they don't read your website.

They don't study your ads.

They scroll straight to the reviews.

Same thing you do on Amazon.

How many reviews?

What rating?

How recent?

You size up both options in about ten seconds and decide.

Not on your craft. Not on your story. Three numbers.

So if the guy down the road has 240 reviews at 4.8 and you've got 32 at 4.7, they're not calling you.

You never had a shot.
That's not bad luck.
That's bad math.

And the worst part?

You probably did a thousand great jobs that should have turned into reviews and never did.

Every one of those was a future customer you'll never meet.

Every time your phone rings, you're either making money or lighting it on fire.

Most contractors think they need more leads.

They usually don't.

Your email list, referrals, messaging, reviews.

All worth doing.

All take weeks or months to compound.

But how you answer the phone?

That's a one week fix.

Write the script this weekend.

Train your team Monday.

By Friday you're already closing more of the leads you're paying to get.

It's the highest ROI thing on the list.

And it's the one almost nobody fixes, because it's not new or exciting.

It just quietly decides whether the rest of your marketing was worth doing at all.

Every customer makes three decisions in the first 60 seconds of an inbound call.

Do I trust you. Can you solve my problem. Do I want to take the next step with you.

Most calls fail one of the three. Usually all three.

The fix isn't hiring a sales closer.

The fix is writing down a five question qualifying script that anyone on your team can run.

How you answer the phone isn't a sales skill. It's a system.
Sales skills walk out the door the day your team member quits.

Systems stay.

If your phone process only lives in your head, it dies the second somebody else answers the phone.

05/28/2026

The hardest part of marketing isn't getting leads.

It's getting someone to pick up the phone and actually call you.

And most contractors throw that call away in the first 60 seconds.

You can run the best ads in the world.

You can have 500 reviews.

You can have perfect messaging. None of it matters if your team picks up the phone and says "yeah, what's your address?" with no qualifying, no texting, no booking, no next step.

That's pouring water into a bucket with a hole in it.

05/27/2026

How you answer your phone is leaking more money than your ad budget.

Sixty seconds.

That's the window between when a customer dials your number and when they hang up.

If you do between $1M and $3M a year, here's exactly what's happening in those sixty seconds.

You pick up.
Or your spouse picks up.
Or your office manager.
Or some junior team member who's been there six weeks.

"Hello, this is so-and-so company."

Then you let the customer drive.
They ask the price.
You give them a number.
They say "okay, we'll think about it."
They hang up.
You go back to work.

That lead cost you $80 to generate.
Or $150.
Or $300.

It walked right back out the door without ever becoming an opportunity.

You spent the money to make the phone ring. Then you handed the conversation to whoever happened to be standing closest to it.

The leak isn't in your ad account. The leak is in the sixty seconds you've never trained anyone to handle.

That's the job.

Wanted to take a moment to officially introduce someone who has quietly become one of the most important people at Presto Media.

Meet Sy.

We brought her on a couple months ago and honestly she hit the ground running faster than I expected.

What started as one role shifted pretty quickly when it became clear where she was going to make the biggest impact — operations and client success.

And when you look at what she brought to the table it makes complete sense why.

Sy comes with over 12 years of experience in compliance driven environments. She has managed documentation and operations for organizations supporting thousands of users across the US, UK, and APAC. She has built systems, coordinated cross functional teams remotely, and done it all with the kind of detail and follow through that most people talk about but few actually deliver.

Since joining Presto she has cleaned up our onboarding process, tightened up how we communicate with clients, and brought a level of organization that has made everything run smoother for our team and the businesses we serve.

The best hires do not just fill a role.

They make the whole team better.

Sy has done exactly that.

Head of Operations and Client Success — and already earning it every single day.

Welcome to the team officially Sy. Glad you are here!

Most service business owners think the next $1M comes from spending more on ads.

It usually does not.

After working with contractors and service businesses for five years there are five levers that consistently add revenue without touching the ad budget.

Your past customer list.
Your referral system.
Your messaging.
Your reviews.
Your phone process.

Most businesses have all five sitting there underleveraged right now.

We broke down exactly how to pull each one in our latest YouTube video.

Link is in the comments.

Only about 5% of your market is ready to hire you this week.

That is it.

Out of every 100 homeowners who need what you do, maybe 5 are picking up the phone right now.

Most contractors only market to those 5. Google ads. Waiting on referrals. Fighting every other contractor in their market for the same tiny pool of people.

That is why growth feels capped. The pool is small and it is expensive to fish in.

Here is the part nobody talks about.

The 5% who are ready this week did not come out of nowhere. They became the 5% because somebody spent months showing up for them when they were still in the 95%.

If you are not building your brand with the 95% right now you are not creating tomorrow's customers.

You are just fighting over today's.
