Elvis Presley Didn’t Just Wear Clothes — He Had His Own Style
Elvis Presley always liked to be well dressed, and long before the famous jumpsuits of the 1970s, fashion was already an important part of the way he expressed himself.
Bright colors, open-collar shirts, tailored jackets, high-waisted trousers, distinctive shoes, jewelry, perfectly styled hair — Elvis could take something unusual and somehow make it look completely natural on him.
But there’s an interesting contrast when we look at his movies.
In many of Elvis’ Hollywood films, the wardrobe belonged more to the character and the studio’s vision than to Elvis himself. Depending on the role, he might appear as a soldier, cowboy, race-car driver, mechanic or ordinary young man. Those costumes didn't always reflect the much bolder way Elvis chose to dress in his private life.
Off camera, there was much more freedom.
As the years went by, Elvis increasingly developed a look that was unmistakably his own. By the late 1960s and 1970s, especially on stage, nobody could mistake him for anyone else. The leather of the ’68 Comeback Special, the dramatic collars, belts, jewelry and eventually those legendary jumpsuits all became part of the Elvis image.
Some outfits were extravagant. Some were beautifully simple.
But Elvis wore clothes with confidence — and that confidence was what made the style work.
Fashion changes. Trends disappear.
Yet almost 50 years later, you can still look at an Elvis photograph and immediately know: nobody else could have worn it quite like him.
