When staffing is limited, every position on the fireground becomes even more critical and none more so than the pump operator who sometimes preforms the work of multiple people. The operator ensures that our crews on the line have the water they need, when they need it, no matter the scenario.

We emphasize training all of our newer firefighters to become proficient in securing a water source on their own whether itโ€™s from a hydrant or relay. Being confident and capable behind the pump means our firefighters can transition quickly between roles while maintaining efficiency.

When seconds count on the fireground, and a skilled pump operator can make the difference between control and chaos. Thatโ€™s why we continue to train, drill, and reinforce the fundamentals so all of our members are prepared for whatever comes next.

On Saturday evening, October 11, 2025, Chief Benkwitt held an awards ceremony to recognize outstanding acts of service and years of dedicated service to our community.

๐Ÿ… Incident Response Honors:

Class 1 Citation โ€” FF Andrew Camardella
In February 2022, Firefighter Camardella arrived at the scene of a 3-Alarm Fire at 17 5th Avenue and immediately observed two women screaming for help from a fourth floor window on the 5th Avenue side of the building. The two residents were trapped across from the fire apartment. Acting without hesitation, FF Camardella utilized the aerial ladder to vent the window and enter the apartment.

He successfully removed the first victim via the aerial ladder, then made a second climb to the 4th floor where the second victim had become unconscious. Donning his mask, FF Camardella crawled past the fire apartment without the protection of a hose line removing the unconscious victim, handing her off to Pelham Police officers who carried her down to EMS for treatment.

Lifesaving Awards:
โ€ข Lt. Timothy Frusciante, FF Michael Leak, FF Andrew Camardella, and FF Shane Macdonald for their actions that resulted in the cardiac save of Pelham Manor Fire Captain John Gerken.

โ€ข Lt. Michael Mullen for performing CPR while off duty on a civilian in cardiac arrest at a local gym.

โธป

๐ŸŽ– Years of Service Recognition
โ€ข 5 Years โ€” FF Anthony Borsella & FF Christopher Paolercio
โ€ข 10 Years โ€” Lt. Frank Bellantoni, FF Ralph Magliulo, Lt. Michael Mullen, FF Joseph Melendez & FF Michael Senerchia

We want to congratulate the newest member of our department, PFF Aiden Reynolds, on completing the Westchester County Career Chiefโ€™s Fire Academy following in his fatherโ€™s footsteps.

Over the past 20 weeks, PFF Reynolds and the other 41 recruits from Westchester County, Dutchess County, Orange, and Nassau County successfully completed over 790 hours of training to be prepared to serve their respective communities. This is no easy feat, mentally and physically.

PFF Reynolds begins his in-house training on Monday, and we are excited to have him!

Congratulations, PFF Reynolds, and to the rest of the 01-25 Academy Class! Stay safe!

A big thank you to the directors and command staff at the Westchester Career Fire Academy for sharing their knowledge and skills over the past 20 weeks with all the new recruits. Your dedication to the future of the fire service does not go unnoticed.

On Friday we celebrated the retirement of Lieutenant Peter Reynolds, a lifelong Pelham resident who has dedicated nearly three decades to the Village of Pelham Fire Department.

Lt. Reynolds began his career on September 9, 1998, and rose through the ranks to become a Lieutenant in 2013. In 2016, he was appointed as the departmentโ€™s Fire Inspector. Over the years, he earned multiple commendations for his actions during both fire and medical emergencies.

Lt. Reynolds was a proud and active member of Local 2213, serving in leadership roles including Vice President and President. He also played a key role in supporting the Lt. Joe Leavey Foundation and helped organize several community softball tournaments that brought people together for a good cause and honoring the memory of FDNY Lt. Joseph Leavey.

His legacy of service lives on through his son Aiden, who is currently attending the Westchester County Fire Academy and following in his fatherโ€™s footsteps.

We thank Lt. Reynolds for his years of dedication, leadership, and service to the Village of Pelham FD. Wishing him all the best in his well earned retirement!

First known as โ€œDecoration Day,โ€ it began three years after the end of the Civil War when a former Union general called for a way to remember fallen service members. For decades, Americans marked the holiday on May 30. In 1971, the federal government officially designated the last Monday in May as Memorial Day.โฃ

Today we honor and remember all the men and women of the armed forces who died defending our freedom. To all the men and women currently serving, Thank You.
