Rick Parker was a recent guest on Comic Culture. Terence had the opportunity to read Rick's graphic memoir and offered this review:
Rick Parker’s graphic memoir Drafted is a gem. It’s a touching, funny, and uncomfortable look at growing up while serving in this man’s army.
Parker’s loose, cartoony art belies the complexity of emotions on each page. He reflects back on his life some 60 years ago with an unflinching eye, not afraid to reveal embarrassing moments and the lessons they taught him. Drafted is the story of a kid who gets drafted during the Vietnam-era, falls up, and finally realizes what he wants out of life. Parker’s writing is nearly perfect, with each chapter bringing young Rick closer to figuring things out and author Rick putting things into perspective.
Rick Parker has achieved a lot during his long career in comics. Drafted is simply his best work. I’m hoping for a sequel.
