Nationwide ‘Hands Off!’ protests erupt against Trump and Musk

Demonstrators gathered across the country on Saturday, many animated by differing issues, but united in opposition to the Trump administration with the single message: “Hands off!”

Organizers said more than 1,300 “Hands Off!” rallies of varying sizes took place on Saturday.

Since President Trump took office in January, various protests have taken place against his administration’s plans and policies — from the mass firing of federal workers to immigration raids to the involvement of billionaire Elon Musk in the federal government.

Saturday’s protests appeared to be the most widespread to date of Trump’s second term.

ICYMI: WESTON-MCEWEN 44, KNAPPA 39

Kelsey Graham had a game-high 16 points as the TigerScots held off the Loggers in a 2A quarterfinal game at Pendleton High School.

“The goal has been the next game in front of us,” W-M coach Jeremy Wolf said. “When we do that, we have been successful. Knappa came to play. We have to make sure to take care of the ball better. We expected them to come out hard and they never quit.”

Weston-McEwen (23-6) will play Western Christian in the semifinals, while Knappa (21-7) will play Central Linn in a consolation semifinal game.

Kylie Kramer had four points in the first quarter as the TigerScots took a 10-5 lead.

In a sloppy second quarter, the Loggers went on an 8-3 run to knot the score at 13-13 at the half.

Graham scored eight of her points in the third quarter as the teams forged a 23-23 tie heading into the fourth quarter.

“I’m really proud of her,” Wolf said of Graham. “She has really worked on her leadership position, not only this year, but since she was a freshman.”

Weston-McEwen hit 6 of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter, including three by Brooklyn Parker in the finals 17 seconds of the game to seal the win.

The Loggers hurt themselves with a 2-for-8 performance from the line in the fourth. Parker and Charlotte Hansell each added eight points for the TigerScots, with Hansell hauling down 11 rebounds and recording three steals.

Mylie Lempea led the Loggers with 11 points and five steals, while Lucy Oien had 10 points and BetLarsen had 10 rebounds.

Graham and Oien were named the Moda Health Players of the Game.

Nixyáawii falls to Country Christian in overtime in 1A state opener

By ANNIE FOWLER, THE CUJ

BAKER CITY — Country Christian outscored Nixyáawii 13-5 in overtime to hand the third-ranked Golden Eagles a 91-83 loss in the quarterfinals of the 1A state tournament Thursday, March 6, at Baker High School.

“It was a tough loss, but I’m very confident our boys will bounce back,” Nixyáawii coach Aaron Noisey said.

Nixyáawii (24-4) will play Days Creek on Friday at 10:45 a.m. in the consolation semifinals, while the Cougars (22-7) will play three-time defending state champion Crane in the semifinals.

The teams were tied 78-78 with 2 seconds left in regulation when Nixyáawii’s Rylen Bronson launched a 3-pointer. He was fouled by Christopher Ewing and sent to the free-throw line.

Just needing to convert one of the three shots for the win, Bronson missed all three, sending the game into overtime.

In overtime, Tyson Smith had seven points to lead the Cougars to victory.

Country Christian opened the game with a 13-10 lead in the first quarter, but Nixyáawii answered with a 26-20 run in the second, behind 12 points from Weptas Brockie and 10 from Symon Picard, to take a 36-33 lead at the half.

The Cougars went on a 24-17 run in the third for a 57-53 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

Bronson had eight points in the fourth quarter, and Brockie added five as the Golden Eagles went on a 25-21 scoring spree to tie the game.

Bronson led Nixyáawii with 25 points, while Symon Picard had 18 points, eight rebounds and three assists, and Brockie had 18 points and nine rebounds. Sun Schimmel added 11 points, eight rebounds and three steals, and Marcellus Scott had eight points, eight rebounds and three steals.

Tyson Smith had a game-high 37 points and four steals for the Cougars, while Danyon Schneider and Ryan Gordon each had 14 points. Gordon also had 17 rebounds.
