Charges being filed after Great Dane dies in a hot car in grocery store parking lot in Pennington Gap, Virginia.

Statement from Pennington Gap Police Chief Matt Lawson:

"This incident is a tragic reminder of how dangerous it can be to leave a pet unattended inside a vehicle, especially during warmer weather.

Temperatures inside a parked vehicle can rise rapidly, even when windows are cracked, and conditions can become life-threatening in a very short period of time.

I encourage all pet owners to take precautions and avoid leaving animals unattended in vehicles. If you cannot take your pet inside with you, the safest option is to leave them at home where they have access to water and a safe environment.

Our officers take these situations seriously. We ask the public that if they observe an animal in distress, they contact dispatch immediately so the situation can be evaluated as quickly as possible.

This incident remains under investigation and criminal charges are being filed, we cannot discuss specific details of the case at this time. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this unfortunate situation."
