Unintentionally, I timed my first experience in a Santa Fe just right. Hyundai thoroughly revised it for 2021.
Cosmetic updates include new front and rear bumper fascias, a modified grille, new wheels, and fresh headlamp and taillight designs.
The interior features a new “floating” center instrument panel and offers a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, 10.25-infotainment touchscreen, wireless charging, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as technologies such as Cyclist and Junction-Turning Detection.
The trio of new engines includes the turbocharged and direct-injected Smartstream 2.5-liter I4, which comes paired with an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic.
In the new Calligraphy trim level, the Santa Fe is equipped with a special grille finish, unique 20-inch wheels, quilted Nappa leather seating, a head-up display, a suede-like headliner, and the Smartstream 2.5 coupled with HTRAC all-wheel drive.
The Santa Fe Calligraphy’s elevated materials made my Hyundai tester feel more like a Genesis. The attractive center stack gave me quick and easy access to important controls.
In the second row, there was ample legroom, sliding and reclining seats, and manual side sunshades.
Ride quality was comfortable without being sloppy. The Santa Fe’s ample power enabled me to get up to speed quickly. Staying entertained was not a problem thanks to the Harman Kardon audio system and wireless Apple CarPlay.
My test vehicle didn’t have a dedicated off-road drive mode, but it did have HTRAC all-wheel drive, a locking center differential, and Downhill Brake Control. By no means does that make it a hardcore off-roader, but it definitely makes it capable of getting to campsites or cool photo spots.
By the time my week with the Santa Fe Calligraphy was over, I had put 383 miles on it. According to the onboard gauge, I averaged 25.1 mpg.
