We’re Johan and Lanette, two adventurers who took the leap to live full-time at sea! On September 30, 2024, we officially embarked on our life aboard the Villa Vie Odyssey, where we’ve secured a cabin for the next 15 years—guaranteeing a future filled with endless adventure and exploration. 🚢

We’re not retired or wealthy, but we’ve found a way to balance our professional lives with the freedom of the open ocean. Lanette continues to remotely run her auto glass business, while Johan has dived into building our Living Life on a Cruise YouTube channel, which has become his primary focus. Together, we share our journey, tips, and experiences to inspire others to embrace a life of travel. Our epic adventure spans seven continents, 147 countries, and 425 destinations over the next 1,301 days (3.5 years)—and we’re documenting it all! 🌏 Expect breathtaking destinations, practical tips, and a glimpse into how we maintain our lifestyle while exploring the world. We came back to our cabin and found a little sloth hanging out in the plants! 😂

Our steward Sami made him out of towels, right down to the little eyes. Sami always takes such good care of us, and surprises like this make us smile. He’s the best, and we’re so grateful he’s part of our life aboard the Villa Vie Odyssey.

Thank you, Sami! 🤙

Sheila, our waitress on board, brought us the sweetest gift from the Philippines—pili nuts her mom makes! We’d never tried them before. They’re light and soft, with a little sweetness and salt, and we kept reaching into the jar for just one more. Johan and I could hardly stop eating them!

We’d absolutely buy these if we spotted them at a market, but what made this jar special was Sheila thinking of us and wanting to share something from home. After living together on this ship for nearly two years, the crew feels like family. Thank you, Sheila, and please thank your mom for us! 🤙

We walked through Thai Binh Market in Ho Chi Minh City, and yes, the seafood and produce caught my eye. But can we talk about how the vendors sit?

One woman was perched on a tiny stool, and the butcher was sitting cross-legged right behind his counter. Meanwhile, I’m over here wondering if I could get back up after five minutes. My knees could never!

What happens when a group of shipmates hits the Walking Street in Ho Chi Minh City? A full-blown bar hop with plenty of dancing, cocktails, laughs and a few surprises along the way!

We had an absolute blast exploring the nightlife together. Huge thanks to Eddie for organizing such a fun night! These are the kinds of memories that make traveling the world with our ship family so special.

The short was only part of the story…

After discovering that a channel with 2.5 million subscribers used our photo for a story that had absolutely nothing to do with us, we asked all of you what we should do.

Now we’re sharing the full story—how we found it, what they claimed, what happened when we commented, and how we ultimately decided to handle it.

Watch the full video and let us know what you would have done!

Goodbye, Hanoi… hello, Ho Chi Minh City!

After seven amazing nights in Hanoi, we packed our bags and flew to our final stop in Vietnam. We arrived in Ho Chi Minh City to rain, traffic, and all the energy of the big city!

We’ll spend the next few days exploring before meeting back up with the ship and finally going home. After weeks of traveling through Vietnam, we’re definitely ready to sleep in our own bed again.

We had an amazing time in Hanoi! We originally thought we would stay for just a few nights, but we loved it so much that we ended up staying for seven!

We explored so much of the city, spent time with our friends Dwight and Sheila, met new friends along the way, took our first rickshaw ride, and of course did what we do best… bar hopped our way around Hanoi!

Vietnam continues to surprise us, and we would definitely stay longer and return to Hanoi again. What an unforgettable week!

We weren’t quite sure what to expect from Hanoi’s famous water puppet show… and at first, we’ll admit, it felt a little corny. 😂

But once we settled into it, the music completely won us over. The live musicians and singers were incredible, and the whole performance turned into such a wildly different experience from anything we’ve seen before.

What surprised us most was how much goes into making it all happen. There were at least 10 puppeteers working behind the scenes to bring the entire show to life. 😳

By the end, we were really glad we went. Definitely one of those uniquely Hanoi experiences that’s worth seeing at least once. 🇻🇳🤙

They used our photo for a story that isn’t about us… so what would YOU do? Report it, ask them to remove it, ignore it, or just let it ride?

We’re REALLY trying to like Vietnamese food… 😂🇻🇳

One of our goals while we’re in Vietnam is to stop ordering the safe stuff and actually try some of the local dishes. So today’s adventure was Hanoi snail balls/snail sausage for 150,000 VND — about $6 USD.

We tried. We really did. 😂

For us, they were very chewy, and neither of us cared much for the flavor. Definitely one of those glad we tried it… probably won’t order it again experiences.

And this menu gave us PLENTY more opportunities to be adventurous — blood clams, frog hotpot, pig ear salad, roasted dove, chicken feet, boiled snails… and that’s just getting started. 😳😂

We may eventually find our Vietnamese-food sweet spot.

Until then… when all else fails, vodka! 🍸😂🤙
