Join us August 16th at the 78th running of the World Famous Peoria TT as we honor Michael McCoy for his years of serving our community. Mike grew up in Peoria and graduated from Peoria Central High School. After high school, Mike joined the US Air Force, Illinois Air National Guard and became a X-Ray Technician taking a position at Graham Hospital in Beardstown, IL.
While in Beardstown, Mike was recruited to join the Beardstown Police Department and after two years returned to Peoria and started a career at the Peoria County Sheriff's Office as a Corrections Officer. Mike was quickly promoted to Deputy Sheriff, followed by moving up to Detective and then Sergeant. In 1976, Mike was selected to attend the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA.
Upon Graduating from the FBI Academy, Mike returned to the Peoria County Sheriffs Office and two years later, at age 29, was appointed Chief of Police in Peoria Heights until he was recruited to the private sector as a Corporate Director of Safety and Security for National Printing Company.
In 1994, Mike returned to the Peoria County Sheriffs Office, working for Sheriff Chuck Schofield. Upon the untimely death of Sheriff Schofield, Mike was named Sheriff of Peoria County in June of 2002 and served as Sheriff for 15 years, until June of 2017. Mike finished his career by serving as Chief of Police for the City of Washington, IL from 2017 until his retirement in May of 2025, closing out 48 years of public service.
Mike is most proud of his affiliation with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the world renowned organization specializing in catastrophic diseases and cancers in children where he served 15 years on the St. Jude/ALSAC National Board of Directors and Governors.
Mikes' passion for St. Jude led him to co-found the St. Jude Memphis to Peoria Run, Motorcycle Ride, Corvette Drive and the 45 associated additional auxiliary/satellite Runs/Rides/Drives. Under Mikes leadership, these events have raised more than 102 Million Dollars for St Jude thru the end of 2024.
Join us in thanking Mike for his years of service to our community!
